This futuristic YA novel focuses on the relationship between Titus and Violet, both of which have a feed wired into their brains. The feed is a barrage of information from the Internet, television and smart phones combined.

I had no idea what this book was about and was pleasantly surprised at how it kept my attention. The unique plot was intriguing, and I liked the main characters. The narrator of the audiobook exaggerated the voices of a few and that ruined it a bit for me, but overall it was an interesting book.

Mike Wingate was abandoned on a playground at the age of four; therefore, he was raised in foster care. He had no memory or understanding of the reason why, but forges ahead with his life and becomes a loving and devoted husband and father. Out of the blue, someone threatens Mike and his family. Again, he doesn't understand the reason why.

I should not have spent 14 hours listening to this book! The tiny bit I knew about it intrigued me, but ultimately it never captivated me by its plot or characters. I considered giving up at disk 3, but plodded on because I thought for sure I would end up liking it. I would have been better off following my gut! Even with Scott Brick as the narrator, who usually is a favorite of mine, annoyed me. So, I'm chalking this one up to not good timing. However, this is the first Hurwitz book I've read, so sad to say, I'm fairly certain I won't be picking up another one by him any time soon.

The subtitle does the job of sharing its actual content: What Being Poor Does to Kids' Brains and What Schools Can Do About It.

I read this for our District-Wide Book Study. It definitely had some interesting and eye-opening stats, but there wasn't any revelations regarding teaching techniques. However, revisiting this topic is never wasted time, so I'm glad I participated and will take a refreshed attitude about our students.

Inspector Vaara lives with his very pregnant wife in Helsinki, Finland. He's assigned two cases with his new partner. One case revolves around a war hero's participation in WWII and the other involves the murder of a wealthy woman.

Oh my. While I enjoyed learning more about the main character and the Finland culture, I did not enjoy the foul language and crass plot line. The new partner definitely added some interesting scenes, as did Vaara's in-laws who came to visit, but the whole book seemed a bit odd. However, at the same time, it had an appeal. I'm not exactly sure what the appeal was, but it encourages me to stay on the lookout for the third in this series. I hope all the trashy talk is out of the author's system by then.

Set in some type of dystopian time-frame, Saba's teen-aged, twin brother, Lugh, is kidnapped and she will do anything to save him.

The main character, Saba, was the biggest obstacle that stood in my way of really enjoying this book. As the story progresses, she changes and grows, but she didn't change quick enough. I also was extremely annoyed with her saying, "I says" instead of "I said," and the swearing, in general, was unnecessary. Putting all of that aside (although, very difficult to do), I thought the story line was okay. I did want to know why and how Saba was going to save her brother; however, it was not all I had hoped it would be.

I really enjoyed this book. There were a few predictable and not-so-believable parts, but overall I looked forward to visiting with these characters and didn't freely want to put the eBook down.

I don't read a lot of women's fiction, but discovered that I really liked Jio's style. Her words captivated me from the start, and I was even swept away with the sweet romance. I'm excited about getting to her debut novel The Violets of March. Thankfully, it's sitting on my TBR shelf. :)

This is a perfect story for both adults and children to learn about and understand the mind of a child with Asperger's Syndrome. Caitlin was delightful and did not seem fictitious at all. The narrator did a fabulous job portraying her.

HEADS YOU LOSE

An adult brother and sister discover a body in their backyard. They can't call the police because they are running an illicit business, so they take care of matters themselves. The problem does not go away. They become sleuths to find the killer and the reason as to why they have been involved. That's virtually the plot, but the authors allow us to view their conversations with one another (notes at the end of each chapter) and they really "make" the story.

I am one of the few that wasn't wowed by the first book in Lisa Lutz's Spellman Series, so I didn't jump at this book when it came out, but . . . was curious nonetheless. I took the opportunity to listen to it when I saw it sitting before me at the library.

As with The Spellman Files, I was not impressed. The plot wasn't anything that I was excited about, and I certainly didn't relate to any of the characters. The banter (notes) between Lisa and David was the best part by far. Overall, it wasn't horrible or anything, but it just wasn't my preference for enjoyable reading.

Not a great start to a new year, but there are many more books ahead. Can't wait to add books to my Best Reads of 2012!

I've been reading this a chapter at a time and really trying to give it a chance (completed 36%!), but it just wasn't working for me (works for others, though - 4.5/167 reviews on Amazon). After some internal prodding to get with it and finish it, I just couldn't give any more of my time to it, so I gave up. I now have peace. Whew! (Why is it so hard to give up on books sometimes?) In fairness to Mansell, I am not a connoisseur of chick-lit.

This collection is composed of 65 stories written and published in a variety of magazines and anthologies. It is divided into four categories: Jack and Friends (characters from his Jack Daniels series), Crime Stories, Horror Stories and Funny Stuff.

Light Drizzle is from the Funny Stuff category, and it really was just ridiculousness. I don't usually like that kind of humor, but needed to keep reading to complete my 50th short story for the year (need to meet my goal of 52). And, lo and behold, the ending made me smile big! It was actually funny and worth the read. :)

After 20 years of incarceration, a prisoner is released on a technicality. Meanwhile, the detective who originally put him there does everything in his power to make sure the evidence sticks this time and the guy stays behind bars.

I'm surprised this detective character hasn't inspired the author to produced a series. I found him and his circumstances (losing his eyesight) to be very intriguing. The deterioration would compromise and add an interesting angle to his profession. Most of the book was very good, but there were occasions when it got a little slow, thus a just under the 4 rating.

I experienced many thoughts throughout this book, most were negative, but I continued to try and enjoy the book for its "take-you-away" value. That mindset helped me maintain interest, but I certainly wasn't riveted and shook my head much of the time. Even though I knew this most likely wasn't going to be for me, I'm so glad I gave it a try. My curiosity has now been put to rest. Good night and good riddance to this series.

I suppose I can understand why children would enjoy this story, but for me there was probably more that I didn't like than did. And, I don't think the narrator was a good choice at all. So, overall, it was an odd little book (very peculiar family), but had a good message. I am glad that I finally took the time to find out what it was about, though.

I like Rhyme. Being that he's a quadriplegic, he uses the latest technology to help him navigate a computer and relies on others to be his hands and feet. Amelia understands him and trusts him when he guides her through difficult scenarios out in the field. I liked their connection and the forensic focus used to solve the case. The suspense was gradually built and kept me interested throughout.

I wasn't wowed by this scrapbook (graphic novel), but I enjoyed the experience and would read another. It was a great way to learn about the 20s.

It was a peek into the relationships of families that are torn away from each other for the sake of others. This short story had a slow and a steady pace of suspense building throughout. I would have liked a definitive ending, but enjoyed the suspense nonetheless.

OMGoodness! I didn't like the second one in this series because of all its nasty talk, but decided to go ahead with this after a friend said it wasn't that bad. Well, it wasn't, but I still don't like reading about these types of clubs and even though I rated this one higher than the second in the series, I think this is my last. The author apparently isn't moving away from his favorite topic, so I'll be doing the moving (moving on, that is). It's too bad because I liked Jonathan Stride.

In May, 1945, a sightseeing trip over New Guinea brings devastation when the plane crashes, leaving only 3 of the 24 passengers (soldiers and WACs - women's army corp) alive. Due to their injuries and the natives, their exit out of the jungle was dubious.

This trip gone awry was an interesting look into the tribal customs of the natives and the rescue mission. Although, I was not riveted or eagerly awaiting my return to the audio after each listening period. There were just too many details that were of no interest to me. Overall, the story was worth the listen, though.

Westerns aren't my genre of choice, but thought I'd give this highly acclaimed book a chance. The good news is that I found it to be more interesting than the last western I read (here), but it definitely hasn't inspired me to read any more. However, I do still want to finish Lonesome Dove that I started years ago (and was enjoying), but I'd have to start from the beginning again, and that's a big deterrent.

My dislike for this book had nothing to do with the writing; it mainly was the general western lifestyle and attitude. The actual story contained little bits of everything from serious to darkly humorous events. (I recognized that certain scenes were supposed to be funny, but I did not crack a smile. It just wasn't my type of humor.) And, it had its moments of gore (some animal cruelty, too). So for me, it was just okay, but I can understand why others may have enjoyed it more.

This reminded me of a YA version of the Maisie Dobbs (Winspear) series (my thoughts), which is one that I thoroughly enjoy. This first in the Mary Quinn series was very engaging. I loved the historical details and the plot. I did have some little quibbles here and there, but nothing too serious. I like that Mary had a sketchy childhood, because it added to her edginess and provided her with street smart skills she needed. I will definitely read the next in the series titled The Body at the Tower (2010).

Woo hoo! I found myself another series to follow! It's graphic (very Karin Slaughter-like) and on occasion, a bit shocking, and like Slaughter, held together with a solid plot. There were surprising twists and turns, some wit and some interesting characters and relationships, too. My only complaint was that sometimes I would feel a jolt in the flow. I thought I had missed something and would go back to find I had not. The holes would eventually be filled in, so once I caught on to her writing style, I was fine. Can't wait for the next one!

Parts of a body are discovered which trigger questions like: Who is it? What happened to the rest of body? How did it get where it was found? and Who did this? The answers to those questions and many more are what the author sets out to divulge in the rest of the book.

I loved the bits and pieces of history that were scattered throughout, in addition to the 1890s timeframe, but overall, I didn't really like it. There were just too many characters mentioned (and oodles of details) without really getting to know them; hence, no real connection to anybody. I also wasn't all that intrigued with the journalism wars. The mystery and courtroom activity were what kept me interested.

A little boy seeks out his father, and a little girl seeks out the actress in her detailed scrapbook. Their individual stories are told in words and pictures, respectfully, yet 50 years apart. Ultimately, they blend together in a gentle way.

There was nothing I disliked about this book. I actually really enjoyed my purposeful, slow read/perusal, but I didn't think it was excellent like the majority of readers are proclaiming. I didn't think his illustrations were as special as his last book (redundant, too) and the story, while still interesting, was not as compelling. It's another great choice for reluctant readers, but ultimately I was not wonderstruck.

This was a major disappointment. All the hype had me geared up for a wonderful read, and I didn't get what I had anticipated. Boo. I found there to be so many plot points that were unbelievable, and the main character was not likeable. The only thing I sort of liked were the flower definitions, but those didn't keep me entertained for too long either. The whole thing just fell flat. Glad I read it though, because I would have forever been curious.

Unfortunately, this book didn't quite meet my expectations. The first half was good, but the setting seemed to be more important in the second half, thus losing the plot's focus. And, Munroe was a cold, superhero. She just happened to be an expert in everything, making her unbelievable. Ultimately, I think the book was a bit too ambitious. I am definitely interested in seeing where Munroe will go in the next book. Hopefully, there will be some warmth and other characteristics that I can relate to, because I like her profession.

I did like the budding relationship between Melanie and Jack, the journalist, but not enough to overpower the ghost gunk. I will not be continuing with the series.

I have come to thoroughly enjoy graphic novels, including the true crime genre. While I thought the content of this one was clear, the organization of it was not. I didn't care for the back and forth in time. It made the flow a bit scattered, causing difficulty in maintaing the tension. Even just a bolder announcement that we were flipping back and staying in that timeframe for a longer period would have been helpful.

I appreciated seeing and feeling Tom's angst and commitment to the case through the graphics of this novel. Also, the killer's cold and detached demeanor was evident. Thankfully, with Tom's perseverance, the guy was caught and put away.

I'm intrigued with all the aspects of this series: the environment in which Dawson lives and works, his family life and his career. I think Dawson is a terrific character. He is not without flaws, but they are not absolutely outrageous. His cases have taken me into some dark and unique places that I wouldn't visit otherwise. And, one of the best feelings a reader can experience, I have been captivated every time I pick up the book. I think Kwei Quartey is a superb storyteller.

Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped at the age of 11 on her way to the school bus stop. She wasn't discovered and reunited with her family until the age of 29.

I already knew Jaycee's story from TV news specials and reading bits and pieces online. However, it was great to hear Jaycee's story straight from her. She shares that the book may seem confusing (fragmented, jumbled, going off on tangents), because it was a very confusing time in her life. She says to come back 10 years from now to hear a less confusing story when she sorts it all out. For now, this is her.

I kept those thoughts in my mind throughout the book and was able to dismiss the simpleness of language and ideas and focus on the bewildering experience Jaycee was describing. There was a time that I started to disconnect (journal about her cats), but remembered that the cats were her lifeline and quickly got back on board. Listening to her feelings behind the words very clearly indicated confusion and a survival mentality. I loved Jaycee's attitude and perseverance during her captivity and since her release. Even though much of her growth in many areas of her life were arrested at age 11, she had a solid base that kept her strong.

I can't quite say this was "very good," but I definitely enjoyed it. I especially liked going back to the audio version. (I listened to the first four, then received ARCs for the next two and didn't enjoy them as much.) The characters are so alive in the audio and are what I like most about the series, but I do enjoy the mystery aspect and subtle humor, as well. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the cast of characters of Three Pines, I found that the mystery didn't interest me as much this time around. However, there are some story lines that have been set up for the next book, and I'm curious as to where they are going to go.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. The coming-of-age aspect felt honest and real, and in light of anything can happen behind closed doors, Pattyn's family seemed realistic, as well. Now, the plot worked, but what disturbed me most was the ending - especially as a young adult book. It was not a good message and left very little hope. Does a book have to end all happy? Of course not, but this just left me feeling a little blah and disappointed, so "just okay" is what this book gets.

Argh. This was difficult to get through and not because of the actual story line, but the pure boring nature of it. I wanted to give up throughout the first 2/3. I held on because of the ratings. The "good" part must be coming soon, I kept reminding myself. Finally it became somewhat interesting, but not enough to save the book as a whole. Also, I didn't like how it was told - at all. I need more interaction and dialog. The talking at me was torture. I don't understand the draw and high praise it has received, but all the power to those that have loved it. It should have been a DNF for me.

Listening to this was such a comfort after giving two fiction audiobooks a go and just not connecting with them. I loved going up north and visiting with Alex (and a few other repeating characters), again. However, the plot didn't offer anything really deep or complex, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. While I do like a variety of fiction, I'm partial to mysteries, and this one hit the spot.

This story carried a good deal of suspense, which is what I really enjoyed. The ending was a bit anti-climatic, but still fitting for the story line.
