I know many of us have discovered several new authors as we have participated in the gazillion challenges we joined this past year (Joy said endearingly!) and I also know that we have stumbled upon some books that we thought were really great and some maybe not-so-great. Well, here's the perfect excuse opportunity to explore 3 new-found authors that you would love to go back for a second helping. I hope you'll join me.
WHO: Anybody
WHAT: Read 3 books by authors that you have only read one other
WHERE: Mister Linky will keep track of monthly books read here on "Thoughts of Joy..."
WHEN: October, November and December, 2007
(Directly following the Non-Fiction Five Challenge)
WHY: Because we love to read...why else?
Sign up below with a link to your post of your 2nds Challenge choices:
Hmmm - with the Summer Mystery and Medical Mystey challenges I'm reading 6 new mystery authors just before this would start. What a great idea!! I'm sure I'll join, but I'll wait till closer to start date to figure out my list. What fun! I love challenges that only require a one a month pace.
ReplyDeleteGreat new look, Joy! And I like this idea for a new challenge. That will be about the time I will be ready for another challenge. As SuziQ said, it's perfect right after the Summer Mystery Reading Challenge. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I can find 3 - count me in!
ReplyDeleteI like this purple you've chosen, Joy. I'm all challenged up (I might even be in a little over my head) at the moment. I had no idea the non-fiction five was going to prove so challenging (I love it).
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I was looking through my TBR list and I've got loads of 2nds I'd like to read! I'm pretty sure I'll join but I'll wait until closer to the start to post my list and all that.
ReplyDeleteOh, what a fantastic idea! Gonna start pondering my list!
ReplyDeleteSuzi ~ One book a month works for me too. Glad you'll be joining me.
ReplyDeleteLiterary Feline ~ Thanks! I love the 3 columns. I feel more centered.
Lynne ~ Hooray! Glad to have you.
Kookie ~ I'm glad you're enjoying the non-fiction five. You have a lot of time before this one comes up, so maybe you'll feel less pressure by then.
Tanabata ~ I have loads, too! I think this will be great for us to see what authors hold up to our first impressions.
Debi ~ Oh good!
oh, you know I'll be here. I'll have no problem picking another book by new-to-me authors. I'll check back in later.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like fun - count me in! I'll be back to post my 'seconds' a bit closer to the starting date...
ReplyDeleteRaidergirl3 ~ Okay, sounds good to me.
ReplyDeleteMo ~ Hooray! Glad you joined us.
I really wish I had known about the Non-Fiction Five in time--but some of the "second reads" on my list are non-fiction...so maybe I'll just pretend. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a great challenge!
Trish ~ You can still join us. The more the merrier! :)
ReplyDeleteJoy, my Feed reader lost your blog, so I haven't touched bases for ahile. I wonder if that happened when you changed you blogs looks. BTW, really snazzy looking. Love the 3 columns.
ReplyDeleteThis challenge sounds great. Will be thinking of books and get back to you.
I just had another thought. If I understand the challenge correctly we can only have read ONE previous book by the author, right? Meaning that I can't count Austenland by Shannon Hale because I've read THREE others by her.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good rule. I'll get Austenland into some challenge, some way or the other. If I didn't have all these Canadian books to read I'd just pick it up and read it. Afterall, it's quite short. Oh, bother!
Wow, unbelievably enough, just today I was thinking how cool it would be if someone did a challenge like this! This, or a New to You Authors Challenge, for those authors we always wanted to get around to reading.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for hosting it! I still need to think of my list, but I'm definitely in!
A new to you authors challenge would be great for me also, Nymeth! I've also been thinking about short story challenges as I love to read them, but don't very often. I haven't seen a lot of short story readers, though, in my bloggin so far.
ReplyDeleteBooklogged ~ I'm guessing you lost me when I changed my header. It's messed up, but I don't feel like taking the time to fix it just yet. :) Sorry for the confusion.
ReplyDeleteAnd, yes, you are correct in that Austenland could not be used in this challenge. It has to be a second read only. I'm sure other books will be dropping in your lap soon. :)
Nymeth ~ Great! Glad to have you. I did a NEW-TO-ME Author-Based A~Z Read by myself. Type in "new to me" in the white rectangle at the top of my blog and click search blog. You can see my list. I loved it.
Trish ~ It doesn't have to be a formal challenge if you don't want to fuss with that. You can do it by yourself. I also did a Title-Based A~Z Challenge. I really enjoyed both because I was forced to seek out different genres and authors.
Funny you should mention short stories. Last weekend I had a gift card and was determined to spend it, so I purchased just that...a book of short stories! I have no clue if it's a good collection, but oh well. It's mine now. :)
What a great idea for a challenge, I am in for this challenge. I will post on my blog soon those authors that I have only read one book to help me finalize my book list.
ReplyDeleteJoy - I have the Oxford short story reader edited by Joyce Carol Oates and really like it (although I did purchase it for a class). Another good one is "Points of View" not sure who the editor is. Then I have my various collections for specific authors, but no other "surveys." I love short stories, but for some reason I don't read them often.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm still debating on the Non-Fiction 5--I've got a list, but I think I'm starting to go crazy. ;) If I do join in on the fun, it will probably be sometime soon.
Pamela ~ Oh good! I look forward to seeing your list.
ReplyDeleteTrish ~ The short story collection I got is The Best American Short Stories 2006. Thanks for sharing your titles. I'll look into them.
Great challenge idea, Joy!
ReplyDeleteMy choices are the following:
1. Tears of the Giraffe by Alexander McCall Smith
This book is a sequel to The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency which I enjoyed very much.
2. Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde
Another sequel--this time to The Eyre Affair. I can't wait to see the further adventures of Tuesday Next.
3. Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson
I absolutely loved the Pulitzer Prize-winning Gilead and hope to enjoy this book just as much.
I've re-arranged my list a little bit...hopefully for the last time!
ReplyDeleteThis will be my third challenge, trying to do the easier ones until I am good at it.
ReplyDeleteLindy
This sounds like a fun challenge - I just posted my choices! Thanks for letting me participate! =) Jill
ReplyDelete3M ~ I haven't read Gilead. Hmmm, you have made me curious.
ReplyDeleteTrish ~ I know the feeling. :)
Grilsgood & Jill ~ Glad to have you. :)
Joy, I have a question: does it have to be authors we have read one novel by before, or can it be authors whose short stories we are familiar with, and whose full-length books we've been meaning to read?
ReplyDeleteEither way, I think I'm going to be able to come up with quite a few titles - perhaps too many for my own good!
Nymeth ~ If you read the short stories by the author then that would be considered a first read and a novel by that same author would be the 2nd. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm in. This sounds like fun. =)
ReplyDeleteRG ~ Glad to have you. :) It won't be starting up for a while, but it's fun to plan for it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great idea, I am in. I will post my list on my blog soon. Thanks. Rosangela
ReplyDeleteTHanks for hosting such great challenges. I just stumbled upon your blog, too bad I would have liked the Non-fiction 5 although I mostly read non-fiction anyways. But I'm all ready for the 2nds challenge!
ReplyDeleteCuz, you know, why not??! I will see who I can wait to read a second of for this challenge. Some are reeeeealllly calling me to read another of theirs. Ah well. Anticipation is good for the....something.....
ReplyDelete-V-
I think I will be joining, but I will post on my blog a little closer to October. Although I have already sort of already chosen my authors (Haruki Murakami, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Virginia Woolf), but not the books.
ReplyDeleteRosangela ~ Glad to have you! :)
ReplyDeleteCallista ~ Stumbling is good...in this case. :) Glad you found me and that you'd like to participate with us.
Vickie ~ I know the feeling. I've already read a few, but that helps me with whittling down the list.
Nyssaneala ~ Oh yea! I look forward to seeing your choices.
Hey Joy, I couldn't pass this one up! I swore off any more challenges for the rest of the year, but this one's just great. I love your blog by the way!
ReplyDeleteChris ~ I'm claiming this is my last challenge for the year, too! :) Glad you're joining us and thanks for the compliment. That was very kind of you.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting my list ready to post right now. It will be more than three books since there are several that qualify, but the more the merrier, right?
ReplyDeleteFramed ~ Absotivily (LOL, sorry, I'm reading ANANSI BOYS by Gaiman right now and there's a character that says that). Anyway, it's great that we have so many authors that we want to read more of their work. I'm thinking they will be beaming and hopefully we will be too! :)
ReplyDeleteA great challenge!
ReplyDeleteThe winter here in Norway is so long and cold that reading good books has become a way of surviving for me. I'll be reading Zusaks Im the Messenger, Fraziers Thirteen Moons and McCullers The Ballad of the Sad Cafe
Count me in! My list is up! :D
ReplyDeleteI am finding challenges addictive. It's hard not to join. I really look forward to this one, and I'll post my list soon enough. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteMarianne ~ Welcome! All the way from Norway, huh? It's summer here, but I'm still reading! :)
ReplyDeleteMelody ~ Hooray! I'll come see it soon.
Athena ~ They give another reason to read certain books you want to read anyway. Glad you're joining us.
I have chosen my books: 1. Specimen Days by Michael Cunningham, 2. Pale Fire by Vladmir Nabokov, and 3. This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald
ReplyDeleteSee you all in October. ;)
Even though I had said I couldn't take on any new challenges, I have signed up for this one. I added a link to my post of books I have picked on my blog and am set to go in October. I only hope I can put off reading them until then!
ReplyDeleteRhinoa ~ I know exactly what you mean! Glad you're joining us. :)
ReplyDeleteOops, I didn't link to the post with my choices, I just put a link to my blog. I'm new to your blog but when I saw this challenge I had to sign up. I'm really excited.
ReplyDeleteHere're my choices
ReplyDeletehttp://astripedarmchair.blogspot.com/2007/08/autumn-challenges-or-how-eva-went.html
The challenge looks like a lot of fun!
Aka_nik ~ If your list is on the side bar then linking it to your whole blog is fine. It's just easier for people when they want to see your choices to have it linked to an individual post if you wrote one. It's no big deal though.
ReplyDeleteEva ~ I'm looking forward to it. I hope you enjoy your choices.
I don't have a good track record for sticking to challenges, but I couldn't pass this up.
ReplyDeleteThe list is still something of a work-in-progress.
Poodlerat ~ Glad you're joining us! I'm guessing you may have trouble limiting it to three like me. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm in!
ReplyDeleteNyssaneala ~ Hooray! :)
ReplyDeleteGuess I will get around to some of my "To be read" books after all :D
ReplyDeleteGreat Challenge! Not sure on which books I will choose, but I will no doubt include Javier Marias. :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome challenge! I am so glad that you thought of this, since I have wanted to read some other books by great authors, but haven't had much incentive, since there are so many other books to read!
ReplyDeleteFleiger ~ Glad to be of help to you. :)
ReplyDeleteKay ~ Okay, I admit it. I don't know who Javier Marias is, so I will go do some exploring now.
Stephani ~ Purely selfish idea. Like you said there are so many good authors that I would like to read a second of, but the new authors are always so enticing.
I've picked 5 books...though I'm not sure I'll get to all 5, so I'm counting them as 3 for the challenge, 2 alternates. :)
ReplyDelete1. March - Geraldine Brooks
2. Ethan Frome - Edith Wharton
3. Number the Stars - Lois Lowry
4. The Almost Moon - Alice Sebold
5. Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
Thanks for the challenge! I just wrote my post, and linked to it on Mr. Linky, but it won't post until 8/28, so it MAY not be live until then. :)
J ~ Great list! I'll pop by your site tomorrow. Glad you're joining in on the fun. :)
ReplyDeletethis is a great challenge idea, and i just have to join in the fun! my list is up on my book blog!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like something I might be able to do. Helps that the sight will take my posts, as some wont'. No idea what I am doing yet. Nice that it has type big enough to read.
ReplyDeleteAlison ~ I left a message on your blog. :)
ReplyDeleteLindy ~ Glad to have you. As soon as you get a list ready, it can be linked here so others can see your choices, too.
I've been thinking about this challenge for awhile and just couldn't resist it. I've posted and linked my list. Can't wait to start.

Joy, is there any way to change my link to:
ReplyDeletehttp://1morechapter.com/2007/06/17/2nds-challenge/
If not, maybe I could just add another entry to Mr. Linky
Bookgal ~ Great! Glad to have you.
ReplyDeleteSuzi ~ Hooray!
Maria ~ Great choices! :)
3M ~ I had to add the new link. I couldn't change the existing one.
My list is up HERE. I didn't choose 3 specific books but a list of some to choose from. Hope that's ok.
ReplyDeleteTanabata ~ That's perfectly fine with me! :)
ReplyDeleteJust posted my choices on my blog. Thanks for this challenge!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't hold out any longer! I've just joined and posted my list on my blog.
ReplyDeleteKrin & Nicola ~ Woo Hoo! Glad you both joined. Happy Reading!
ReplyDeleteI've posted my first review in this challenge. It's here: http://booksmemesmusings.blogspot.com/2007/10/magicians-assistant-by-ann-patchett.html
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure this link worked but I'd love to read about other people's choices.
Bookgal ~ The first post of this blog (sticky post) has the 2nds Challenge button on it. Click the button and it'll take you to the post where you can link your reviews for October (there will be a new one every month) and see the others that are linked. It's not a problem for me to do this one for you, so if you check it out, your review will already be there. :)
ReplyDeleteHello Joy--I'm coming so late to the game, it isn't funny, but I wanted to give myself an accountable goal, so I'm hoping I can still sign up...
ReplyDeleteMarina
Marina ~ Of course you can join us. Better late than never. :) Glad to have you.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to join before it gets any later. Thanks! Jan ;-)
ReplyDeleteJan ~ Welcome! This is the last month (December) for this challenge, but it's only 3 books. :) Do you have a list of choices?
ReplyDeleteMy seconds can be found at http://jottingsfromjan.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThanks Joy
I have finished, here is my list:
ReplyDelete1. Sandford, John Invisible Prey
2. Hess, Joan Holly, Jolly Murder
3. Robards, Karen Beachcomber
4. Lindsey, Johanna Gentle Rogue
Lindy ~ Congratulations! I hope you enjoyed all your choices. :)
ReplyDeleteSince I will be away until Jan I will post mine now
ReplyDelete1. Sandford, John Invisible Prey
2. Hess, Joan Holly, Jolly Murder
3. Robards, Karen Beachcomber
4. Lindsey, Johanna Gentle Rogue
Lindy/Girlsgood ~ Are you one in the same? There were 3 months of Mister Linkys to add a link to your posted reviews. You can add them all onto the December one if you want.
ReplyDeleteIt's fine if you don't want to. The most important part is that you enjoyed your reads. :)
