ANNE OF GREEN GABLES

L. M. Montgomery
Genre: YA Fiction
Published: 1908
Personal Rating: 4/5
Yearly Count: 7

Anne is an orphan who accidentally gets placed in a home that was requesting a boy. She is quite a vibrant, prolific girl of eleven that wins the hearts of all those she meets, but not without some trials and tribulations.

Now this classic was gratifying. What astounds me the most is that the reader would never know that this was written in 1908. The themes of relationships, responsibilities, teenage thoughts, etc. all transcend time making this very much a good read for today, as I'm sure it did in the 1900's. Anne was a delight to meet and L. M. Montgomery must have had an active imagination herself in order to make Anne seem so alive. I want to follow Anne's life, so I will be continuing with the series.

  1. I'm so relieved that you liked this! I know you haven't had much luck with classics, so yah!
Keep reading, I love the whole series, and I think Rilla of Ingleside is my most favorite.

  4. I loved these books when I was young. Rilla is one of the best, but she's Anne's daughter, so you've got a lot of books to read in between now and then. They're all fantastic though.

  5. I read the series when I was in elementary school. Oh, how I wanted to have a life like Anne's. I still think of her when I hear the phrase "kindred spirits." You're in for a treat with the rest of the books. Have fun!!

  6. Oh how I love these books. I read them through many many times. I've always thought Gilbert and Anne have the most romantic story ever. You'll be hooked on the series now.

  7. I still have the first three of this series from my childhood, so they must be 30 years old at least. But I have never read them. Now you're making me think that maybe I should. Hmmm.

  8. Raidergirl3 ~ I didn't even think about it being a "classic" until I was done. Thank goodness, it could have tarnished my enjoyment. :)

Alix ~ I never had an interest in it as a child. I'm glad I read it now, though.

Tanabata ~ Thanks! I don't know when I'll get to them all, but I hope to.

Frogdancer ~ Yes, quite a ways to go. I guess there are 8 of them?!?

  9. Les ~ I like the term "kindred spirits", but didn't hear it until I was an adult. Just think if I had read this book for the age intended, I would have been so much more enlightened! lol

Bold Blue Adventure ~ "Many, many times" Wow! :)

Debi ~ I enjoyed this first one and all you have to do to get incentive is reread the comments above yours! They all love it! :) And, I actually have a copy of the first three, too, but it's in one volume. I think that's why I never read it. I'm afraid of chunksters.

  10. Isn't that little Anne such a delight? I just love her attitude. I first read Anne this last summer and, like you, I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I haven't mentioned this yet, but I love how you have your name with the little heart at the end of each post.

  11. many, many times

I've read the series over and over, but not recently. I used to get them out every year or so. I only have to open a page of Green Gables and see Matthew's name to burst into sobs.

  12. Booklogged ~ Oh! I have to come by your blog for a visit and see what you said. And, yes, Anne was a delight . . . a very inquisitive, bubbly delight. :)

Thank you for the compliment on my signature! :) I think it's kind of fun.

    Raidergirl3 ~ I loved Matthew, too.

  13. WHAT?? I have to be honest that I'm surprised by your review (given your general disdain for classics). I grew up with Anne, so when I revisited the book a few years ago I really struggled with it (much in the same way I did Little Women earlier last year).

But, like I said--I grew up with Anne and really loved her, so I hope you enjoy the rest of the story... And then watch the movies, which are wonderful. :)

  14. Trish ~ Have no fear. I'm sure this was just a minor glitch in my "disdain classics" mode. I'm sure it'll return. BUT, I hope not with this series. :)

I had no desire to read about Anne when I was younger, so it was a pleasure to reminisce about that age now.

  20. I hope I get to read this this year. It's one of those classics that I somehow missed when growing up. But it sounds like a timeless story that can be enjoyed at every age :)

  24. I tried to read the Anne books as a teenager, and for some reason just couldn't get into them. A couple of years ago I picked up another copy of Anne of Green Gables and LOVED it. I've read the entire series now along with a couple of L.M. Montgomery's other books. Aren't they fun?? I'm sure you'll enjoy the others as well and wathching Anne grow up.

  25. Paula ~ Our age really does affect our view of what we read, so what happened to you makes sense. Eventually, I'll pick up another.
