THE BLUEST EYE

Toni Morrison
Genre: Fiction
Published: 1970
Personal Rating: 2.75/5
Yearly Count: 4

Well, my winning streak of chosen books has come to an end. This book brought flashbacks of Lolita (Nabokov) and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Angelou), both of which were not favorites of mine. With the many controversial issues presented, it would probably make a good adult book club read. For me, it satisfies my desire to read a Morrison novel and the pleasure of crossing it off of my lists.

  1. Sorry to hear that this one didn't do much for ya. I'll be reading it in February as part of the Year of Reading Dangerously. The only other Morrison I've read was Beloved when I was a teen, and I didn't get much out of it at all.

  2. Andi ~ If the Year of Reading Dangerously has a discussion group format, this would be good.

This type of book has the feel of a "classic" and those do not appeal to me...unfortunately.

  3. Well, at least you can say you read it, huh? That's more than I'll ever be able to say. lol

  4. Bummer--I read this one years ago but remember liking it. I liked Sula as well, but had a tougher time with Beloved (also years ago).

  5. That's to bad. I'll try to remember to keep that one of my list. Hopefully your next read will be much more satisfying!

  6. Debi ~ Yep! I know she's not my cup of tea.

Trish ~ You are not alone. Many, many people love this book. There were parts that I liked. It ended up just being under "okay".

Paula ~ I was so looking foward to reading a "Morrison" book. I even did a poll here to help me choose which one.

Like I said above, many people enjoy her style and topics. Her books actually have very high ratings; she's just not for me. I don't want my thoughts to "contaminate" yours. You may love it. :)

I'm sorry you didn't like it. It's one of my all-time favorite books. I wrote my honors thesis on this book in college.

  8. Stephanie ~ You are a perfect example of exactly what I was saying to Paula up above. :) Unfortunately, it's just not my cup of tea. BUT, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! And, yes, there certainly would be a lot to write about concerning this book.

  9. I'm reading this for the My Year of Reading Dangerously CHallenge. I read Song of Solomon years ago and only somewhat liked it, the verdict is still out on how I feel about Toni Morrison's novels.

  10. This is one of those books, kind of like Faulkner's Sound and the Fury, that I respected the genius behind it, but didn't enjoy it at all. I haven't ever read anything else by her because of it! I hope I'm not missing out.
