16 LIGHTHOUSE ROAD

Debbie Macomber
Genre: Fiction
Published: 2001
Personal Rating: 2.5/5
Yearly Count: 41

Olivia Lockhart, a judge in Cedar Cove, Washington, lives at 16 Lighthouse Road. This book revolves around Olivia and all those in her life including: her mother, her children, her friends, her ex, her new male friend, and the people she presides over on the bench. AND, there are offshoots from the people already mentioned. So, there is a mega amount of characters all sharing the drama in their lives.

This type of book is just not for me. The concept of meeting people in a town and learning about their lives isn't all that bad, but to me this is like knocking on a stranger's door and asking them to share their life with you. I'm assuming that's the point of the book, Welcome to Cedar Cove!, while that may be a very nice compliment, I still have no interest in these people. Don't get me wrong, they are good people, but I can experience this in my daily life. I would rather read something else. Life is too short.

  1. I'm actually surprised you gave it a 2.5 - this is SO not your type of book :-)

Yes, I think you probably rated it generously for your taste, Joy. LOL I do like these books, but I know they are not for everyone. I wouldn't want to read ones like this every day, but she updates about once a year and that is enough for me. It takes a wise woman to know what speaks to her and what doesn't. Onward to the next one and I hope you like it better! :-)

  3. Suzi ~ Ultimately, I think it's just too close to home and I want to read or experience something different through books. Not that I'll ban this genre, but I certainly won't seek it out.

As for the 2.5, I don't know. I struggled with that rating. I have to give Macomber some credit because she made it seem real.

There is hope though. I have learned to appreciate and enjoy "cozies" this year. They used to be in the same camp as this type of book.

  4. Kay ~ I looked at my current Best Reads of 2008 and I really have an eclectic group of books there. I'm enjoying more genres than I ever have, but this one still is a struggle for me. We all have our own likes and dislikes and that's okay, but I keep trying other genres so I don't miss out on anything good. :)

    What's your favorite genre?

  5. I just mooched this whole series and have second-guessed myself ever since. Hopefully I will like it better than you did, but I wish I could remember why I wanted them in the first place.

Actually, my favorite genre is mystery. Always has been from my Trixie Belden/Nancy Drew reading days. But...I like to hop around from time to time and have read a little of most everything. I always come back to mysteries.

  7. Framed ~ The series is very well-liked, so my guess is you will enjoy it, too. It's not like it's bad writing, it's just not a genre preference for me.

Kay ~ I loved Nancy Drew, too. :)

  8. I've only read one or two of Macomber's book, but have often thought of trying this series. I already have one in the middle of the series, but I'm too anal to jump in and read it. I'll snag the first at the library and see how I like it. Sorry this wasn't a hit for you, but my goodness woman! You've already read 40+ books this year! I think I'm on #16.

  9. Les ~ If you want to meet some people in Cedar Cove, Washington and learn about their lives - ups and downs - then you'll like it. :)

I've listened to a LOT of the 40+ and YA books are included in that count. I'm taking advantage of the time I have to listen. However, being that I've been listening during the day, I haven't been actually "reading" that much. For now, it's working. I've been able to get to a lot of books that I've been wanting to read. That's a WIN for me!

  10. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm understanding what it is about this book--unless the book is JUST about the character's lives? ( know that's not a complete thought... :) Is there no conflict or plot? Just...here is the town and these are the people? I've never read anything by her, but our library at work (which has a strange assortment of books for an insurance company) has a few by her. Sounds blah!

  11. Trish ~ Well...the character's each have their own conflicts, but there isn't a plot that runs throughout the book other than they all live in the same town (and are connected to Olivia in one way or another) and want to live a good life.

I'm guessing that others love this series because they get to know the characters and they feel like friends. I can see how that could happen. I'm just not interested - not right now anyway.

  12. I can understand what you mean. I'm not big on this type of fiction either--although I don't mind a good series now and then.
