THE YELLOW WALLPAPER

Author:  Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Genre: Short Story
Published: 1892/1992 Oxford Book Collection
Personal Rating: 4.25/5
(SS) Yearly Count: 8

In a short sentence - a woman married to a physician experiences depression.

This story was told from the woman's perspective.  She shares her thoughts with the reader through her journal entries as she lives day to day with a gradual decline in her mental status.  The yellow wallpaper plays a large role in her health.

Gilman's, 1892 very realistic portrayal of the slipping, human mind could be right out of someone's journal today.  I find it interesting that not much has really changed in that respect, but I suppose depression is depression.  The good new is that so much has changed in ways of treatment.

  1. I *almost* read this one yesterday but then decided to try something I haven't read before. Have you seen CB's Septebmer Short Story Challenge? I don't have the link off hand but you can find it on my recent short story posts. He's doing one entry per short story and there will be a few giveaways at the end of the month.

  2. This one I would definitely want to read. I don't know why but I've always been fascinated with reading about mental problems(hmmmm, maybe that's telling me something-lol). Anyhow, I think I may have to peek at this book after all these interesting reviews your shooting out.
