DEEPER THAN THE DEAD

Author:  Tami Hoag
Genre:  Thriller, Oak Knoll Series #1
Published:  2009
Personal Rating:  4/5 (very good)
Format:  Audiobook
Yearly Count:  53

Set in Oak Knoll, California, a bully is chasing his classmates into the woods, and they stumble over a dead woman.  The manner of death indicates the work of a serial killer.  Anne, the teacher of the children and Vince, the FBI profiler, join forces with the local police to catch the killer before he strikes again.

It's often necessary to suspend disbelief in thrillers, and I needed to exercise that practice a couple of times with this one.  I prefer not to have to do that, because it takes away from my enjoyment, but I did like trying to figure out who the killer was within the plentiful suspects.

I read this one last year. Started it on audio and got so caught up in it that I had to go to a paper copy because audio was taking too long!

  2. I used to read this author, I think I might have to get back to her with this one.

Yep, I concur, you definitely need suspension of belief with thrillers, but I read to escape and the suspension is part of that.
That said, there are some where the suspension is great as to be tiresome.

  3. This sounds good and I don't really have any probably suspending disbelief if it's turns out to be a great book!

  4. Kay ~ I have the book, but stuck with the audio. I'm not usually concerned about the pace, because I'm doing something else while listening. I have been known to find something else to do, so I can keep listening though. :)

Vickie ~ I love the chase and the process of solving a case in thrillers/mysteries, so unrealistic plot points aren't my preference. I do have to remember from time to time that it isn't meant to be real.

Staci ~ Unfortunately for me, it's not a great book if I have to do a lot of suspending. I have to believe it for it to be great. My internal believing sensor doesn't allow any excess nonsense. I have no control. :)

I used to love her books, but it's been awhile since I read one. I didn't realize that this was the beginning of a new series. I'll have to check it out.

  6. Stacybuckeye ~ I think this may only be my second one! I loved my first: Kill the Messenger. I have several on my TBR shelves and iPod. I'm looking forward to more! This one is good cuz it's the first in her new series. I have the second on my iPod, which I hope to get to sooner rather than later, so that I'm up-to-date.
