"C" Author-Based A ~ Z Reads

KILLING FLOOR
Lee Child
Personal Rating: 4/5

This book was Child's debut thriller. It was published in 1997, and I purposefully chose to read his first rather than his latest, so I could begin at the ground level with Jack Reacher, the main character.

Jack is introduced as an ex-military policeman who happens to stumble upon a crime as he's passing through a southern town. His connections to the crime drive him to revenge and the revealing of a conspiracy. While the plot was good, I experienced some questionable moments and was also surprised as to the amount of descriptive violence. Despite the holes and gore, I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more in this series.

  1. Yeah - it's harsh, but I just love Jack!! Glad you liked it. I've read the second in the series, but haven't gotten to the third one yet.

  2. I've only read this one, but hope to get to the rest in the series someday. I don't remember too much about Killing Floor other than the fact that I was completely engrossed which was a good thing since we were on a plane flying somewhere. I know the time passed very quickly.

  3. Too funny! I have this book sitting here at work.. it's been sitting here for months. A friend gave it to me to read, and I keep putting it off.
Guess I need to get on it!

  4. YIKES! There are 10 books in this series. And although it sounds great, I better put this on hold until I finish up (or least read a few more) in my several other series (how do you pluralize series?).

  5. Suzi ~ I'm interested in learning more about him. :)

Les ~ It took a long time to read this due to "life". I wish I could have read it in longer spurts instead of so choppy.

Angela ~ It was good. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Booklogged ~ I understand! There's always the TBR list. :)

I remember this book being discussed and recommended years back on a newsgroup called Book Nook. So I put my name on the list at the library (back when I was not so indulgent as to buy books as flippantly as I do today) and read this horrific tale wondering how ANYONE could recommend this!

Turned out same title...different author!!! So, when I finally read this, I did like it.

  7. Killing Floor was a group read in one of my online book groups (ANeed2Read), recently. Since I'm prone to nightmares, friends in AN2R warn me about gory books and they advised me to avoid this one. Sounds like they were kind to warn me!

About The Book Thief ... I'm just cleaning my files (at 12:25 a.m. - need to head toward bed; we got back pretty late from the swim meet) and I came across a review by someone who felt like you do at the beginning of The Book Thief. Here's what she said:

"For the first fifty pages or so, I wasn't sure whether I'd finish the book or not. But soon after that, I was totally and completely hooked. I've done almost nothing but read for the past several hours. And I'm
going to keep this book for a long, long time, even if I never read it again.

By the end of the book, I was sobbing so hard I almost couldn't read the pages. Liesel's story will worm its
way into your heart and soul and live there forever."

Thought you might like to see the opinion of a fellow booklover who felt lukewarm about TBT, before she really got to know the characters. I feel so strongly about this book that I'm biased - I want everyone to love it!!
