By the Decades Challenge ~ 00's (2005) & Personal Genre Challenge

TWILIGHT
Stephenie Meyer ~ YA
Personal Rating: 4/5
Yearly Count: 16

I actually read a vampire book...AND enjoyed it! Thankfully it was a YA book, which gave me a slow, gentle introduction to the genre. Staying in that simply spoken arena ultimately worked well for me.

Being a teacher, I enjoyed the school setting and the children. I expected some immature behaviors and general teenage angst, which was prevalent, but what I didn't expect was how the vampire issue was discovered and formulated in the first place. (I actually had no expectations.) The manner in which the details were revealed was slow, yet for a newbie it was just right and I found it very interesting to learn about them. The actually plot itself was pretty good and I can see why this has transcended into adult hands.

My intentions are to read the sequel, but TWILIGHT has not persuaded me to dive deeper into this genre; although, it was a fun diversion and I'm glad I read it.

  1. I love Vampire books and my first one was the first book in the Circle Triology by Nora Roberts. The name is slipping me. :) lol glad you liked it and some books are just not for everyone but I applalud you for checking it out. :)

  2. Good for you Joy. Now, if sometime in the future, you'd like some meatier vampire fare (so to speak), I suggest you read "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson. It's going to be a movie starring Will Smith this summer and it's a great book. Easy reading, too, for that matter. Onward and upward!

  3. Did I hear "Will Smith"? I'll be seeing that one!

Joy, I enjoyed Twilight, too, but have no desire to go on with the rest of the series. I'm not a vampire reader either, although I read 4 of them last year. I would suggest giving Colleen Gleason's vampire book, The Rest Falls Away, a try. I liked it a lot better than Twilight.

  4. Lover of Books ~ I'll keep your suggestion in mind. Thanks!

Kookie ~ Ahhh, a movie. That might be an interesting one to look up; however, not right now. :)

Booklogged ~ Is that the book you were giving away? Maybe I should pay more attention to those, huh? You said you liked it better than TWILIGHT...hmmmmm. Something to think about.

  5. Joy,

I'm really glad you liked Twilight. I applaud you for branching out into the new genre :). I just started New Moon yesterday. I wanted to take some time in between Twilight and the sequel.

  6. Joy, I agree. It's a fun diversion, and I'm glad I read it, but I'm not chomping at the bit to read New Moon. At least not for a while. And I don't need to own it - a library copy will do just fine for me. Good for you for trying the vampire genre. I knew you were a bit hesitant. Glad it was disappointing.

  7. Joy,
Glad you enjoyed Twilight. I love Vampire and other supernatural books. Its neat that you are trying new things. I am too with some of the other books that I am reading for challenges but I always go back to fantasy or mystery for my fun or comfort reads!

  8. I have never read a vampire book, but may have to change that soon owing to all the great reviews I've been reading. Maybe, if there's another RIP challenge next fall, I'll join in. Twilight would be a good to ease in with.

  9. Emily ~ I was surprised that I liked it as well as I did.

Les ~ I'm a consistent library user, so no problem there.

Amy ~ I'm doing okay with other genres; however, I miss my psychological thrillers.

Framed ~ This really is a good vampire story as an introduction to the genre.

  10. I am so glad that you enjoyed Twilight! When I first learned about this book, I was not sure if I was going to like it or not. I really enjoyed it, though!! Given that I am not prone to pick up a vampire story, I was surprised by how likeable she made the Cullen family.

I did read New Moon but did not enjoy it as much as Twilight. I'll have to post my review on New Moon soon. If you do decide to read it, I'll be interested to learn your thoughts on it:)
