Just for Fun

This is a "challenge", but it's not your ordinary type of challenge. There are NO NEW BOOKS required! Actually, I encourage you to use book titles that are already on your lists to read. This is purely just for fun.

Here's how to play:

Use the common words from your book titles to connect the last title and the following title. For example:

Last Days of Summer

Book of a Thousand Days

A Thousand Bones

Winter's Bone

The last title in your list needs to share a word with the first title making it a full circle. You can see my list for this challenge here.

You MAY NOT:

~ change words like midwinter to winter

You MAY:

~ use titles that you already plan to read! However, if you want to use it for the purpose of creating a new list of books . . . go for it! Or you can use a combination of planned books and new books. Whatever works best for you.

~
make a word plural or singular (the example shows bone/bones)

~
use words like a, as, is, if, of, to, the, etc. whenever needed (although, try not to focus on those)

~ have six or more titles in your circle

~ read the book titles in any order during 2008

~ sign up with Mister Linky so everybody can see your linked books

The main purpose of this challenge is to have fun with words and see how all your books are linked together. Can you do it?

  1. Guess this one just wasn't meant to be for me. I looked through my planned challenge books and my extended TBR list and just didn't find enough titles with words in common.

Right now I'm focusing on challenges that allow me to use mostly books that are already on my TBR list.

Sounds like fun though - enjoy!

  2. Suzi ~ Thanks for trying to play along with me! I love playing with words and this was a fun way (for me) to pull titles off of all my lists of possibilities to help make final choices.

  3. This is not so easy to do, but I'm working on it. Let you know what I come up with.

  4. Booklogged ~ It may be that my books just fell into place. ???

I'm going to change the rules...go ahead and use the "small" words whenever needed. :)

    Thanks for trying!

  5. I'll take a look at my bookshelves to see if I have any TBR books that fit. Fun idea!

  6. Oh, you know this is just irresistible, don't you? If I can do this without adding tooooo many books to the '08 list, I'm in. Off to see what I can come up with.
(And would you please just lay off with all these great ideas for a while?!!)

  7. Nyssaneala ~ I hope yours link together. It was fun for me to seek them out. Word geek, I guess! :)

Debi ~ Well, I don't know how great they are, but they entertain me. LOL Hope you can do it. I'd love to see someone else's list.

  8. Whew! That was a lot harder than it sounded...and it sounded hard to start with!

  9. Debi ~ The challenge idea began because I kept noticing common words in many of my book titles. (I honestly wasn't looking to come up with another challenge.) Evidently, it isn't as easy as it was for me. I'm so glad you persevered. Now the challenge ahead is ... reading them! *grin*

  10. I am forever linking books together but not necessarily in this way. I am sure though that I should be able to come up with something.

    How about

The Other Side of the Bridge
    One Side or the Other
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
    The Midwich Cuckoos
    .... and now I'm stuck

    Speak to you soon.

  11. I did it! And only used a 'little' word for one of the links. It was challenging, but I enjoyed it. I only added 2 books that I don't already own. Hooray!

  20. I'm still working on this.

Trouble is my lists end up being all males authors and I don't want that.

But I can get some great lists if you add just one tinsy-winsy rule. Can I use authors' names to link together? So that I can jump from Penelope Lively to Penelope Fitzgerald .....

  21. Lizzy ~ LOL!!! Go for it...this was meant to be FUN, not cause angst. :)

  29. Kristinsdottir ~ You made me smile! I'm so glad you enjoyed this challenge within a challenge. I think it's one of those things that if you like this kind of stuff, then it's really fun...even when it's time consuming.

I took care of the YA Mister Linky and comment. They are both zapped! :)

I'm off to see your list.

Born ~ Oh good! The more the merrier. :)

  42. It's already November. I'd love to have done this one. It would take some real thinking to make it work. I hope you'll have another when it's over. I'd love to join if you do.

  43. Sandra ~ Coming up with a list of books for this challenge was difficult, but a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I am not hosting any challenges or participating in any in 2009. I've done so many over the last two years that I would like to just read what I want, when I want, with no pressure from anywhere. I have LOVED the challenges, but this coming year will be challenge-free. You can host this one, if you'd like. You can do it however you'd like (change anything) or you could just do it on your own. Whatever you decide, I hope it works out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. OK I'll give this a try.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jenny ~ This challenge was for 2008, so it has already expired. However, it's a lot of fun to create a list. Maybe you can encourage Sandra (above your comment) to host or you could host it yourself! :)
