GINGER PYE

Eleanor Estes
Genre: Children's Fiction
Published: 1951
Personal Rating: 2.25/5
Yearly Count: 13

The Pye children purchase a puppy that they name Ginger. Soon after Ginger becomes one of the family, he goes missing.

While the prospect of getting a new pet is exciting and losing a pet is devastating, the book was actually boring. There is action and mystery involved, but I couldn't get past the repetition and irritating sentence structure. Unfortunately, it's another Newbery winner that I didn't find impressive. It's time for me to shake it off and move on.

  1. I remember reading books by Eleanor Estes, but none of them stuck in my mind except for the picture book about the girl who had 100 dresses.

  2. Bybee ~ I'm not sure if I'm just not in the mood for these old children's books or if it's really the books themselves. Maybe a combo because there are many Newbery's that I'm glad I finally read.

  3. Well crap. Believe it or not, I have this on a challenge list and was seriously considering starting it today. Read it? Don't read it? Crap.

  4. I read this to my oldest son when he was about 9/10. He absolutley loved it and I had to hunt down a copy of the sequel, Pinky Pye, for him. Honestly, I don't remember too much about it myself, just the experience of reading it.

I did read all her books as a kid though. I just loved al the Moffats books.

    P.S. - I just tagged you!

  5. Debi ~ You may tolerate this one better than I did. There are some cute parts, but for me, it was just too boring.

Nicola ~ Even though I didn't care for this one, I'm soooo glad that your son did when he was 9/10. Seriously. You make me think that maybe it is good for younger readers, not all ages - like some children's books. Maybe Debi (above) will like it after all. :)

I read this book when I was in 5th grade. It took me weeks to read it and I HATED even. I remember whining to my mom about how horrible it was. It probably would have been a nice story if it was way shorter. :)

  7. Harmony ~ LOL Sorry to bring up such a bad memory for you. Maybe it's not my age after all. :)
