SO BRAVE, YOUNG, AND HANDSOME

Author: Leif Enger
Genre: Historical Fiction
Published: 2008
Personal Rating: 3/5
Yearly Count: 82

In the early 1900's, Monte Becket lives in Minnesota with his wife and son. After one successful novel, his career has come to a standstill due to his inability to produce. Monte then meets Glendon Hale in a curious manner and the adventure begins.

I did not read Peace Like a River, but have only heard positive comments, so I had hoped this second novel of Enger would be a winner. Apparently it is for others, but I didn't find anything all that good or all that bad about it. I didn't like the plot or the characters, but I didn't dislike them either. Everything just seemed to be okay. Unfortunately, Peace Like a River is going to be pushed down the TBR list, because this read didn't encourage me to pick it up.

  1. I got so bogged down in this one I didn't even finish reading it, Joy, but I LOVED Peace Like a River, and I hope you will read it soon!

  2. I haven't read this one, but I had similar feelings about Peace Like a River--it was a so-so read for me. I know many others who thoroughly enjoyed it though!

  3. Eleanor ~ Oh my! You didn't even finish it!?! I debated on giving it a 2.75, but was kind. I'm not sure what everybody loves about it.

Okay, being that Peace Like a River was loved by you, I won't cross it off my list. I don't know when I'll get to it, but I will.

  4. Laura ~ You snuck in there while I was commenting to Eleanor. :)

I'm thinking if you thought PLaR was so-so, you probably wouldn't like this one. But - you never know. You could love it! LOL

  5. I've had too many of these books this year where I don't like or dislike but feel ambiguous toward them. I thought I had heard good things about Peace Like a River, but maybe I've just seen the book everywhere. I did pick up The Tender Bar the other night thanks to your steller review. :) I might swap it out for one of my other books on the Non-Fiction Five Challenge.

  6. I also thought Peace Like a River was just an ok read. I kind of lost interest in the story and characters about 2/3 of the way through.

  7. Trish ~ OH! I can't wait to read what you think about The Tender Bar.

Tanabata ~ Yikes! I'm going to have to be in the right mood to read Peace Like a River or I won't make it through. I want to like it. I want to like it a lot! :)
