A Sleeping Doll begins a new series featuring Kathryn Dance. She was previously introduced and consulted for her kinesics (body language) expertise in Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series. In this first book, "Dance" is the lead interrogator of an inmate charged with murder who escapes from prison. She continues as lead during the chase.
I love Kathryn Dance's job! Watching people and determining if they are lying or not is fascinating stuff. (I love the new TV series Lie To Me, too.) The book actually follows along the lines of the TV series - giving explanations of movements or choice of words, and definitions of the terms used when interrogating someone.
As for the plot, it was very good. There were a time or two when I wasn't buying in, but for the most part it was a smart written book with many twists. It wasn't on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspenseful, but the story was still very good. The 2nd Kathryn Dance novel just came out last month and it's titled Roadside Crosses. I'm looking forward to it.
I enjoyed the introduction of Dance in The Cold Moon and picked up this book based on the fact that I like most of what Deaver writes! Once I'm caught up with Lincoln I'll move on to Dance.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear I won't be disappointed!
thanks for the great review. i have the audio version of this one.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a book that both my husband and I would enjoy.
ReplyDeleteOh good, you liked it! I'm gonna wait a bit to let the facts revealed in book two (it continues some of the plot lines) fade a bit from my mind but I'll definitely read it before the third comes out so I'm all caught up with her.
ReplyDeleteI like Kathryn, but Lincoln Rhyme will always be the series I'm hoping for when a Deaver book comes out!

Stacybuckeye ~ I didn't read The Cold Moon, but my husband told me about her. I think I've read only one Lincoln Rhyme book, but I have read other standalones by Deaver. Reading The Sleeping Doll was purposeful - I saw the new one coming out (of KD) and didn't want to get behind. I still plan to go back to LR.
ReplyDeleteDiane ~ I listened to this one and thought it was done very well. I do not like a lot of hoopla in my audiobooks, so this was perfect. Just read me the story! :)
Bermudaonion ~ My husband read it and enjoyed it, too.
Nicola ~ I have two years to read the second before the third comes out, but I hope I get to it sooner rather than later. If I can get it on audio then it will be. :)
Lezlie ~ Deaver stated that the books will be published every other year. Kathryn Dance was just out, so next year will be Lincoln Rhyme. :) It gives me some time to get to Lincoln. I really liked the one I read, but I need to start at the beginning. AHHHHH!
Glad to see you enjoyed the first in the series! I read Roadside Crosses and thought it was really good so hopefully you like it too.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't read a book by Deaver. I keep telling myself that I will someday. This does sound good. Thanks for the review, Joy!
ReplyDeleteKris ~ That's good to know, Kris. My guess is that I will. :)
ReplyDeleteLiterary Feline ~ There hasn't been a Deaver book I haven't liked. I've read standalones and now from two different series and he hasn't disappointed me. He has evolved into a comfort author for me. I know I can come back to one of his books and enjoy it. I may not love it, but enjoy it just the same. He's worth a try.
