A southern, 12-year-old, little girl is being raised by a mentally ill mother and a distant father - thus, creating a difficult childhood. Eventually she is swooped up by her distant relatives who embrace her warmly.
I didn't buy into this one. I thought CeeCee, actually all the characters, were pleasant enough, but I didn't feel much depth to any of them. The story was somewhat sweet, but somewhat boring as well. There just wasn't enough substance, tension or boldness for me. It takes a lot for me to enjoy "women's fiction," so I'm not terribly surprised at my reaction. Wish it were different.
Aww, that's too bad. I don't like "women's fiction" either but I'm a sucker for southern fiction.
ReplyDeleteOh, no! I'm sorry this didn't work for you - I just loved CeeCee and Oletta and the wonderful Savannah setting.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to reading this one as it sounds like something I will really like. I'm sorry it didn't work for you, Joy.
ReplyDeleteI love both southern and women's fiction and can't wait to read this one!! Sorry that it didn't work for you but I'm hoping that I will enjoy it!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big fan of either women's fiction or Southern fic, although I've read tons of happy-lovey reviews of this one and I'm still considering it. Not in a hurry, though. It's great to hear your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteLooks like we had the same reaction to this book! Even gave it the same rating. :)
ReplyDeleteNicola ~ I like Southern fiction - a lot. However, not in this fashion.
ReplyDeleteBermudaonion ~ Wish I did, too. Glad you loved it. :)
Literary Feline ~ Apparently, it just isn't my type of book. I hope you LOVE it - like Bermudaonion.
Staci ~ Did you read it yet?
Bookfool ~ Yeah, I heard/read a lot of those reviews as well. If you get to it, I hope it's a delightful book for you.
Les ~ I need to go back and read what you wrote.
Oh no, you break my heart! You must really not enjoy women's fiction or southern fiction if you didn't like this one. It's one of my favorites and I loved CeeCee and the whole novel. I can understand though, as this isn't your favorite genre. I am not a big fan of thriller novels so many of them I don't care for either.
ReplyDeleteBonnie ~ Sorry. I didn't mean to break your heart. :( Actually, I really do like southern fiction. Ron Rash is one of my favorite authors, and I believe all he writes is southern fiction - love his work! It's more about women's fiction that doesn't sit well with me. I prefer to read about stuff I don't know. As a woman, I get enough drama in daily life - no need to read about it, too. :) However, that doesn't mean I won't read it (obviously) or enjoy it (on occasion). I'm so happy you loved it, Bonnie. There's nothing like a great read! I love that feeling.
