RAVEN BLACK

Author: Ann Cleeves
Genre: Mystery, Series #1
Published: 2006
Personal Rating: 4/5 (very good)
Yearly Count:  103

Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez investigates the death of a teenage girl in the Shetland Islands, home of Up Helly Aa (yearly cultural celebration).

I found this to be written in an interesting, atypical fashion. One would think that the inspector would be the main character - chasing down the killer and all, (I suppose technically he was) but I didn't experience it like that. The other characters that made up the story were much more prevalent, which caused them to be the ones that I was more familiar with. It seemed as if Inspector Perez was secondary and remote; hence, he was not readily available to get to know. It wasn't a problem - just unique.  As for the setting, it had great atmosphere, and the plot was filled with many suspects.

I actually had this in my hands once I removed it from the NEW shelf at my local library in 2006. I had too many others at the time, so put it back, but have wanted to get back to it ever since. I'm thanking the ease of my eReader for this accomplishment, and I'm looking forward to the second.

  3. Just got this in the mail a week or so ago. I read a synopsis of one of the books in the series, liked what I saw and wanted to start the first in the series. I am looking forward to reading it when I get back to thriller/suspens mode.
