THE BAT

Author:  Jo Nesbo
Genre:  Thriller, Harry Hole Series #1
Published:  1997 (originally)
Personal Rating:  3.5/5 (good)
Format:  Book
Yearly Count:  5

Harry Hole, a Norwegian police officer, is called to Sydney, Australia to assist in the investigation of a Norwegian murdered woman.

Hooray!  I finally met Harry Hole!  All I knew about him was that he was flawed, so I didn't have any lofty expectations regarding him, per se.  However, I did have expectations regarding the plot (due to the popularity of Nesbo's books), and it turned out to be less than what I had hoped for.  I also found some trouble spots with the translation, but it wasn't too bad.  Overall, it was good.  I'm eager to meet up with Harry again (several on my shelf), but I will be waiting for The Cockroaches (#2) to be published in English before I venture down this path again.  I have so many authors I want to read that I can wait.

  1. Yes! I'm glad that you want to revisit Harry!!! I have to read the Bat. I think I read book 3 or 4 a few years ago for a TLC tour and loved it!!

    1. Staci ~ It's my understanding from those that have read this and the later books in the series that this first one reads differently. It's been said that they can tell Nesbo has definitely grown as a writer in his later books, but still enjoyed this one because his time in Ausralia is mentioned in his other books and now they know. I'm still very excited to continue with the series (have many of them on my TBR shelves), but I was a little disappointed. I hope The Cockroaches is translated soon!

I didn't think this was the title for the first one. I thought it was Redbreast. Is this the new title? It's all so confusing!

    1. Stacybuckeye ~ This is the first book in the series. They have been translated out of order, so Redbreast (really #3) was the first one in the US.
