A widowed father with 3 boys puts an ad in the newspaper for a housekeeper. He receives a response and much, much more.
My first foray into Doig's work was a very nice experience. There were some beautiful passages, and I really enjoyed his writing style. My lack of enthusiasm stems from the actual story. I never had a desire to listen when I couldn't and just wasn't excited about it. It was just a story -- told well, but just a story. While I can't say it was excellent, I can understand why others do.
I started this one and never finished it...at least I don't remember if I finished it or not. Sad, huh?
ReplyDeleteStaci ~ I thought the book was going to go in a different direction, so I was a bit disappointed when it focused on the children. I did love his writing though.
DeleteI know this is one my mom really enjoyed, so I plan to read it... eventually. Maybe I'll try the print version rather than audio. Your review is pretty much how I feel about The Orchardist (Amanda Coplin). I never had a desire to listen when I couldn't and just wasn't excited about it. It was just a story -- told well, but just a story.
ReplyDeleteLes ~ It's definitely worth a read. His writing was special. Like I said above to Staci, I was expecting something else. Had I known, my thoughts may have been different in the long run.
