Walt Longmire, a sheriff in Wyoming, has a challenging case in front of him. The body of teenage boy, who received a suspended sentence for s*xual assault (along with 3 others), has been found dead.
Oh my. I attempted to listen to this book many, many years ago. The narrator, who I am somewhat fond of (depends on the book!), didn't entice me to listen for very long. His voice was slow, low and a bit drawn out. I wasn't in the mood for that. Years later, when Borders went out of business, I picked up 4 paperbacks in this series, and for several more years, they have sat on my TBR shelves. I made The Cold Dish a target to cross off my "Hopefuls" list this year, as it has been on there for 3 years now. I decided to give the audio version a try again, because I don't have the time to read it.
My feelings did not change regarding the narrator. He just made the story slower than it really was, and it annoyed me throughout most of the book. Unfortunately, that DID cause a lower rating. I was not enjoying the book all that much until I only had 1/4 left.
The storyline itself wasn't all that gripping either (probably because of the narrator), but I did enjoy getting to know the characters. Everybody grew on me. I want to give the 2nd book in this series a better chance, so I'll be reading it all by myself when (if) I get to it.

Narrators can really make or break the story sometimes. I really loved the narrators voice on the last audio I listened to. I think she made the book even better than it would've been had I read it. This one doesn't appeal to me anyway, but I'm sorry that you really only enjoyed 1/4 of it!
ReplyDeleteStaci ~ I agree about narrators! Maybe I'm just tired of his voice, because I didn't feel like hearing him years ago, and I still didn't want to hear him read this book. Or . . . maybe I've heard him read so many other genres that he just doesn't fit this one in my mind.
DeleteBummer! I still want to watch this series on Netflix.
ReplyDeleteLes ~ From what I have read and heard, the two (books and TV show) are very different in plots and maybe some characteristics, but both supposedly are very good. This particular audioread experience was very disappointing to me, but I know the series has potential. I'm just not excited to move forward when I ultimately thought it was just okay. There are so many other books I want to explore first.
DeleteFor some reason I thouhght I'd read this but when I checked I hadn't. Not sure if I need to or not!
ReplyDeleteStacybuckeye ~ I'm sorry but my personal feelings regarding it are on the fence, too. However, it is regarded highly elsewhere.
