From NetGalley:

For years, best friends Sarah and Jennifer kept what they called the “Never List”: a list of actions to be avoided, for safety’s sake, at all costs. But one night, against their best instincts, they accept a cab ride with grave, everlasting consequences. For the next three years, they are held captive with two other girls in a dungeon-like cellar by a connoisseur of sadism.

Ten years later, at thirty-one, Sarah is still struggling to resume a normal life, living as a virtual recluse under a new name, unable to come to grips with the fact that Jennifer didn’t make it out of that cellar. Now, her abductor is up for parole and Sarah can no longer ignore the twisted letters he sends from jail.

Finally, Sarah decides to confront her phobias and the other survivors—who hold their own deep grudges against her. When she goes on a cross-country chase that takes her into the perverse world of BDSM, secret cults, and the arcane study of torture, she begins unraveling a mystery more horrifying than even she could have imagined.

I didn't know much about this book, so I was surprised when I found myself visiting this peculiar world.  I realized that this topic must be making the rounds, because I just watched a news show regarding these behaviors, and then now I found myself reading about them.  I don't care to know any more about this subculture. I've had my fill.

Regarding the actual plot, I was interested in the girls' stories.  However, many of their actions did not feel authentic, which caused me to suspend disbelief, but I was still intrigued and turned the pages quickly.  I loved the suspense and was surprised a time or two.  So, even though I didn't believe it all, I still thought it was very good.

My thanks go to Penguin Group and NetGalley for providing me with this eGalley.

  1. This sounds pretty gruesome. I'm not sure if I want to read it or not.

    1. Bermudaonion ~ I don't remember feeling overwhelmed by gruesomeness. Most of the yucky stuff was doled out slowly and told in the past tense (when you already know they survived).

  2. Hmmm....I just might try to read this one. There are a bunch of crazy people out there and honestly, I think there are more people being kept captive that we will never learn about!

Yes, as a Clevelander we are shocked at what has been happening under our noses. Shocked, embarrassed and sad.

    1. Stacybuckeye ~ Yeah, I understand your feelings. We had something happen in our suburban subdivision that shocked us. We had NO clue!
