Lynnie and Homan have been placed in the School for the Incurable and Feebleminded. They fall in love and escape the grounds to find themselves on the doorstep of Martha. She takes them in until the authorities come to retrieve them. All their lives are changed from that one chance meeting.
I read Simon's book Riding the Bus with My Sister in 2004, and I rated it a 4/5. So, when I saw this one in audio at the library, I snatched it up. I have to say, even though I only remember a little from her non-fiction book, I liked it better than this one.
My interest was piqued from the beginning, and I thought it was going great, then as time went on the storyline began to slow down, and I became bored. Simon's Notes & Acknowledgements at the end of the book were more interesting to me than the story itself. I think I prefer her non-fiction.

ReplyDeleteLynne ~ Definitely a vanilla/chocolate thing! I need action, suspense, tension, something other than just a story to keep my attention. I tend to disconnect if I'm not pulled in.
DeleteI too read this last year and it was one of my favorite reads from that year. I think because I have always been interested in the history and foundations of rehabilitation and how we've treated those with handicaps. Maybe it was because of the way the narrator read it that you weren't pulled in? Thanks for the review. I always like to read what others thought.
ReplyDeleteSusanne ~ Maybe my focus wasn't where it was supposed to be. It wasn't on the disabilities. The book did give me insight into why institutions were closed.
DeleteIt's funny how some times I really do like the author's notes in the back much better than the story! Too bad that this one was boring at times.
ReplyDeleteStaci ~ I think I was expecting something else - especially with the beginning. Author's notes have been a wonderful way to gain insight into the person, not just their work. I like that.
