THE DINNER

Author:  Herman Koch
Genre:  Fiction, Standalone
Published:  2013
Personal Rating:  3/5 (just okay)
Format/Narrator:  Audiobook/Clive Mantle
Yearly Count:  100

Two brothers and their wives meet at a posh restaurant for dinner and discussion.

What an odd read!  First of all, I would never have been able to get through it had I not listened to it.  I loved the narrator, so he kept me interested.  However, hearing about every mundane detail of anything and everything was extremely difficult even with Clive.

The storyline was very peculiar.  I have my opinions, but I think they would be spoilers.  Ultimately, I didn't really like it, but it would make a good book club read.  I had many thoughts that I would have liked to share and explore.  A book club would have been good for that.

  1. A lot of people raved about this book when it first came out but enough people have felt like you that I've been leery of reading it.

  2. I remember first reading about this book and thinking it sounded like a strange premise, one I am still not sure I'd like. If I do decide to give it a try, I'll go for the audio, since you liked the narrator.

    1. Literary Feline ~ Interestingly enough, I think it's the strange premise and the oddity of the book that I was hoping would win me over. I still think I would have liked it more if I was in a book club.

I had the audio checked out of the library and Jason gave up on it after the first cd. I had to return it but do want to try it myself someday. I like weird :)

    1. Stacybuckeye ~ I understand why Jason gave up. I wanted to know what was really going on and I thought the narrator did a good job, so I kept going. If it were a book, it would have been set aside as a DNF.

  4. I keep seeing this one everywhere and almost picked it up in paper format the other day. Glad I didn't! So the whole book is centered around that dinner conversation?
