WHEN SHE WOKE

Author:  Hillary Jordan
Genre:  Dystopian, Standalone
Published:  2011
Personal Rating:  3.25/5 (just okay +)
Format/Narrator:  Audiobook/
Heather Corrigan
Yearly Count:  2

Due to Hannah's indiscretion, she has been chromed Red.  She spends her time figuring out how to navigate her new world.

I had no idea where this book was going and was surprised at some of the paths it took.  There were times when I was engrossed and wanted to hear more, but other times when I was disconnected and could care less.  It was definitely not Mudbound quality and not necessarily a read worth recommending, but not a total disappointment.

  1. Pretty much how I felt. The second half was rather weak. I gave it a 3.5/5.

    1. Les ~ Little bit of a bummer, huh? I look forward to Jordan's next attempt, though.

  2. But it was so much better than The Scarlet Letter!

And when I look at it as a new version of that book, it goes up a bit in my mind, that the author managed it so well. But I like future type books anyway. Also, I was impressed with how different it was from Mudbound, an excellent book in its own right.

    1. Raidergirl3 ~ I didn't know it was a new version of The Scarlet Letter until I was into it. So, yes, in comparison to TSL, it is definitely an upgrade. However, I'm not reading it as an English teacher. :) Also, it felt like a YA book to me. I wasn't planning on that.

  3. Your thoughts basically echo mine. I read it for book club and we had a good discussion but like you said, there were times I was really intrigued and others when I couldn't care less. I couldn't even muster up the energy to write a post about it. Loved Mudbound, though!

    1. Trish ~ I hope she moves out of the dystopian/YA genre for her next book.
