After months and months of reading mysteries, short stories, thrillers, adventures, fantasies, romance novels, etc., it's time to start planning for a reality check! Reality in the form of
NON-FICTION reading. Come on in and join the fun!
A FEW POINTS OF INTEREST:
1. Read 5 non-fiction books during the months of May - September, 2008 (please link your reviews on Mister Linky)
2. Read at least one non-fiction book that is different from your other choices (i.e.: 4 memoirs and 1 self-help)
3. If interested, please sign up below with the link to your NFF Challenge post (all choices need not be posted and may change at any time)
NFF CHALLENGE PARTICIPANTS:
I am so glad you are starting this!! I sincerely wanted to participate in the In Their Shoes Challenge...but I can't keep up with how they do it. I much prefer the easy way.....linking my review over here ;) I will definitely be working on my list for a post this week. ;)
ReplyDeleteUm...do you have the code for the button??? I'm sure it's here somewhere ;)
ReplyDeleteDanielle ~ I'm glad you'll be joining the challenge, Danielle. :) I don't know what you mean by "the code for the button". HELP!
ReplyDeleteYay! I am glad you're hosting this again Joy. I will be back to sign up later today.
ReplyDeleteI've really been hoping you were going to host this one again this year! You know, 'cause I really need another challenge to join...ha! But this was definitely one of my favorites from last year. Probably because it "made" me read books that I wanted to read but always found so easy to put off, if you know what I mean. Anyway, both Annie and I will be back to sign up officially. Thanks for hosting this, Joy!
ReplyDeleteAmy ~ I look forward to seeing your list! :)
ReplyDeleteDebi ~ I knew you were in need of another challenge - so this one is just for you! lol
My non-fiction reading has definitely depleted since discovering so many new books and series that I want to read. This challenge helps me to get a more balanced reading diet.
Joy,
ReplyDeleteAggh, What you do to me.....its like a drug. I just cant resist. :::grins:::
I'll work on my list and be back later to sign up.
I love your blog btw. I get so many good ideas from it!
Juli
Oh, boy. Joy, you are sooooo bad for me! I have to think about if I can fit 5 more in. . . I'll be back. . . :-)
ReplyDeleteLezlie
yay! I was hoping you'd host this one again this year. I didn't join last year and ended up regretting it. I still have to pick my books, but I'll be back to post the link once I do.
ReplyDeleteJuli ~ Thank you! :) Most people really enjoyed this challenge last year, so . . . here we go again!
ReplyDeleteLezlie ~ It's all meant to be fun, no pressure. :)
Nymeth ~ Okey dokey! I'm glad you are jumping in this year.
I've been waiting for this one to come around--can't resist a good challenge!! Off to start on my list...
ReplyDeleteSam
Sam ~ Glad you'll be joining us! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm in! Give me a couple of days to post! Yippee! ;D
ReplyDeleteMaggie ~ Yay! Seeing your name reminded me of that "cotton" book.
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun! As I stated in my official post for this challenge, I meant it in the most "thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me an excuse to join yet another challenge" way. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm in!
Lezlie
I missed out on this one last year too but I think I'll join in this year. Let me go look through my bookshelves and I'll be back :)
ReplyDeletethanks for doing this. Kim in ohio
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're doing this again. I was thinking I needed a non-fiction challenge to help me with reading my non-fiction.
ReplyDeleteI'll be in this again - enjoyed it last year and have read a few more since it has finished :)
ReplyDeleteLezlie ~ Woo Hoo!
ReplyDeleteIliana ~ Sounds like a plan.
Kim ~ You could always post what you have read here in the comments. We'd love to know. :)
Twiga ~ Glad to help you out. Speaking of challenges...are you going to host the Medical Mystery Challenge again this year? I know for sure there are two of us that want to join. :)
Sally ~ I've read a few more too, but not as many as I used to. This will help. Glad to see you back.
Well now I'm signed up for the right year!!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I signed up for 2007 yesterday! Note to self: never sign up for Challenges before second cup of coffee!
I won't make my list yet..May is a long way off.
Quenby/ hikaruthedragon/gaijinmama
joined!
ReplyDeletesorry I've added my name without link the first time:P
Quenby ~ No problem. :) Glad you are safe and snug now!
ReplyDeleteValentina ~ All fixed.
I'm in - posting soon
ReplyDeleteHolistic Knitter ~ Great! :)
ReplyDeleteI seriously wasn't going to do any more challenges. Guess I was wrong!
ReplyDeleteI had decided I wanted to read more non-fiction this year, and have put some on just about every challenge I've joined. I think, though, that this challenge is great for making me read them! So, I am joining. Posting my books shortly on my blog. thank, Joy, and you are right - it's easy to read alot of fiction, and let non-fiction drop by the wayside. This challenge is a really good one.
ReplyDeleteCount me in! I've posted my list already. Thanks for creating a challenge that I think alot of us were thinking - 'must increase non-fiction' thoughts....now we can! I like your list, it's really interesting.
ReplyDeleteMaw Books ~ I'm glad you joined us! :)
ReplyDeleteSusan ~ I'll be by soon to check out your list! I really love non-fiction, so it'll be good to read more. Glad you agree!
and yet another challenge I can't pass up! I did it last year, so I'm going to try to do it this year too.
ReplyDeleteKris ~ Glad to see you back, Kris! I'll be by to see your list soon.
ReplyDeleteAaron ~ I'm sorry to have deleted your sign-up name, but your link did not work. Please come back and relink. :)
ReplyDeleteI've decided to put my name on the list but I have yet to post my list. Still not sure what I'll use for the challenge (I have a lot of non-fiction I want to read). I'll be sure to post the list soon and leave the link as a comment on here.
ReplyDeleteAaron ~ It was not properly linking again, so I just put your name on the participants' list and your blog can be linked when you get a post up. It's not a problem.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to have a "formal" list and your choices can be changed at any time. I have a list of "possibilities" on my post. :)
Lindy ~ I'm sorry, but I had to delete your name from the participants' list because your link went to a yahoo group. If you'd like to join us, please link it to your blog post regarding the challenge. Thanks! :) Hope you come back to relink.
ReplyDeleteJoy ~ I tried to add myself again. I posted my list and hopefully it works this time.
ReplyDeleteThe list is here:
http://thatsthebook.blog.com/2935147/#cmts
Aaron ~ I had this typed out for your blog, but couldn't post without creating an account. So...here it is:
ReplyDeleteHooray!!! It worked this time. :) Welcome to the Non-Fiction Five Challenge, Aaron! I read A Long Way Gone from your list and thought it was 'devastingly excellent'.
I hope you enjoy all your choices.
Happy Reading!
I love the quote you have in your header. :)
Sorry for another sign-up Joy. I lost a lot of info from my blog in an update so the other link no longer works.
ReplyDeleteAmy ~ No problem. Thanks for letting me know. I'll just delete the old one. :)
ReplyDeleteI couldn't help myself, I **HAD** to make a list!!
ReplyDeleteHere it is.
http://hikaruthedragon.livejournal.com/5702.html
Happy Reading everyone!
Quenby/ hikaruthedragon
Gaijinmama ~ Would you like to sign up again with your new link?
ReplyDeleteHi Joy.
ReplyDeleteNo thanks, I don't think I need to sign up again. The link on your Mr.Linky is my blog. I just posted the direct link to my blog entry that has my list.
Do you want us to post our reviews here or will you have another Mr. Linky for that? Also, I'm clueless about HTML. My link in my post yesterday (and other Blogger sites
like the TBR Challenge one) won't work here on site, but for some reason it's clickable in the same post that got emailed to me. What's up with that and can you tell me how I can make links work when I post here?
Quenby/hikaruthedragon/gaijinmama
Thank you for hosting this challenge. It will be a great way to break free from my norm and read non-fiction!
ReplyDeleteGiajinmama ~ There will be a Mister Linky to link your reviews.
ReplyDeleteHere's the HTML for linking a post in this comment section:
< a href="Your URL goes here between the quotes">Whatever you want to call it, goes here< /a>
*PLEASE NOTE: There should not be a space between the bolded (2 spots both dealing with the a command). You wouldn't be able to see what to do if I did it properly. :)
Only what you put between the > < will show up, but it will be the link like below:
Whatever you want to call it, goes here
After all that - I'm not sure if that's what you really wanted to know. Let me know. :)
Laura ~ You're welcome! We're glad to have you and I look forward to my non-fiction choices, too.
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm totally in. :)
ReplyDeleteJ ~ Hooray! I look forward to seeing your list! :)
ReplyDeleteLove having an excuse to add more non-fiction into my reading diet!
ReplyDeleteLooks like another great challenge, Joy!
ReplyDeleteAnother great challenge to get on board with - I actually have a lot of non-fiction books waiting in my book shelves so this will help me get through a few of them I hope.
ReplyDeleteKristen ~ I happy that I could be of assistance. :)
ReplyDeleteJill ~ Glad you're joining us!
Karen ~ Sometimes we just need a little nudge to get us in the flow. :)
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI look forward to the challenge! Thank you for setting this challenge up.
-Jessica
I just posted my link. I enjoyed this challenge last year and look forward to completing it this year.
ReplyDeleteI intended to join all along but never got around to posting my list until today, sorry. But it's up now. Thanks Joy for the nudge I need to read some NF again this year. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad some one is encouraging nonfiction! I love nonfiction and I'm happy to join in.
ReplyDeleteA day late, but I'm in...!!! :)
ReplyDeleteJessica ~ You're welcome. :) Glad to have you join us!
ReplyDeleteKrin ~ I'm glad you're back! :)
Tanabata ~ No problem! I hope you enjoy your choices.
Rebecca ~ HOORAY! :) I used to read it more (before blogging). Now, I see so many good fiction book reviews that I can't seem to get away.
Betweenplace ~ You're fine; you're not late. I'm not sure what your name is on Mister Linky, so I'm going through your link here to get to your blog. Anyway - Welcome! :)
Joy, I hope it's not too late to join! I've posted by list and put my link on Mister Linky. Thanks for hosting this challenge...it was too good to pass up!
ReplyDeleteMy list is up!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting--I put my five books up in my recent blog post.
ReplyDeleteI've added my link, I hope it's not too late. Thank you for hosting this challenge!
ReplyDeleteRobin, Erin, Sage & Scribacchina ~ I commented on your blog. :)
ReplyDeleteI have just completed the first non-fiction book for this challenge, In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. It was so compelling, I devoured it in two days! I also mistakenly bought The Tipping Point when I meant to buy Blink. I'm hoping to be able to exchange the book.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea.
I'm just discovering your site. Good stuff!
Good and Plenty ~ Cute name! :)
ReplyDeleteYou can link your non-fiction book on the May Mister Linky. Go to the first post on this blog and click on the Non-Fiction Five Challenge button and it will take you to the post to link. When you link, only link the post of the book. It makes it easier for people to access the review instead of searching through an entire blog.
I read Blink and have The Tipping Point, but haven't read it yet. You should be able to exchange it.
Happy Reading and don't forget to come back and link your reviews! :)
Hope it's not too late to join in the fun! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteRich ~ Nope! It's not too late - we're glad to have you. :)
ReplyDeleteI never posted my list, so here it is:
ReplyDeleteCrucible of war-Fred Anderson
Alexander Hamilton-Ron Chernow
British Civil War-Trevor Royle
John Adams-David McCullough
Mary through the ages-Jaroslav Pelikan
Rachel D.
Well, I FINALLY got my list up!!! And about that 'button'....sometimes there is a button for the image...not to worry...I just saved the image and used that ;)
ReplyDeleteI joined late. I have already read two non-fiction books in the time frame. Is that ok?
ReplyDeleteRachel ~ I read one McCullough book and thought he did a fantastic job for those who had no interest in the topic. (I read it for a bookclub.) Hope you enjoy all your choices.
ReplyDeleteDanielle ~ Glad your list is up! :) I always copy and paste the images, so I didn't know there was another way.
Guatami Tripathy ~ That's great! Keep up the good work. :)
I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date...
ReplyDeleteToday is June 17th, and I am 6 weeks late. Sorry. LOL But I've already read some books that qualify. I hope crossovers are allowed.
Historia
Historia ~ Glad you decided to join us! As long as your books fall into the time frame of the challenge - you certainly can count them. And, yes, crossovers are allowed.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little late joining, but have been thinking about increasing my Non-fiction intake.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little late, too, but here I go!
ReplyDeleteFirst up: Living Homes, Sustainable Architecture and Design by Suzi Moore McGregor & Nora Burba Trulsson.
Am I to post the other four here?
I'm just a tad late, but since I'm a non-fiction reader, for the most part, this ought to be easy. I'll post my books and reviews as I go.
ReplyDeleteI've posted my first review. A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis.
ReplyDeleteI was prepared to stop reading Campbell's "A Charmed Life: Growing Up in Macbeth's Castle" because the book just wasn't doing what I expected it to do. However, I realized that the books I planned to read may not be good ones, and that I have a responsibility to inform others of my opinions. Of course, others may like this particular book after all. I didn't.
ReplyDeleteNicole ~ Hooray! Non-fiction is good for the reading diet. :)
ReplyDeleteDiana ~ Welcome! This Mister Linky is to sign up and link your main post about the challenge, which usually includes your list of books you intend to read. When you finish a book for the challenge, go to the first post of this blog and click on the image. It'll take you to the correct Mister Linky.
Stella ~ It's never too late to pick up a book. :) Glad you found us. I hope your next choice is a better read.
Pussreboots ~ You can link it on July's Mister Linky. Follow the first post on this blog. Happy second non-fiction read!
This will be my first Non-Fiction book challenge!
ReplyDeleteBobbi ~ You joined and finished all at the same time. :) Glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteWhat "July Mr Linky"? Your blog is a little difficult to navigate.
ReplyDeletePussreboots ~ Sorry you're having difficulty navigating. The first post of this blog shows the challenge and its button to navigate to the correct Mr. Linky.
ReplyDeleteHi Joy,
ReplyDeleteI've found your challenge through DRaabe's blog and would like to take part. Now, that's challenging, because I have only good 2 months to finish 5 non-fictional books. But it's holiday time. ;)
Looking forward to all your reviews!
silke:)
Silke ~ Welcome! I just commented on your blog and said the same thing regarding only 2 months left. :) I think you can do it! Don't forget to come back and link your reviews. You can locate the proper challenge by going to the first page of this blog.
ReplyDeleteoops! i just added my review to the wrong page! sorry, joy!
ReplyDeleteJill ~ No problem. I fixed it.
ReplyDeleteHi Joy,
ReplyDeleteI have finished the reading challenge. Here is a link to the Books I read (with links to the reviews):

-Jessica
Jessica ~ Congrats!
ReplyDeleteHi Joy,
ReplyDeleteI've written my first review on "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell here - and immediately started reading the next book on my list. :)
Glenda ~ I am not sure if you intended to join the Non-Fiction Five Challenge (done at the end of September) or if you were advertising; therefore, I have removed your name off the participants' list. If you would like to join us, you are more than welcome, but I ask that you please link your name with a post of your intended reads or just that you have joined the NFF Challenge. If you want, you can place it on your sidebar. Thanks and Happy Reading! :)
ReplyDeleteSilke ~ If you go to the first post of this blog, you will see all the challenges I am hosting. If you click on the image for the NFF Challenge, you will be linked to where you can link your August reviews. :)
ReplyDeleteI did finish this last month, I'm just late posting. :D
ReplyDeletehttp://medbie.blogspot.com/2008/05/nonfiction-challenge.html
Thanks for the challenge!
Medbie ~ Congratulations! I hope you enjoyed it. :)
