I thought this was a sweet, short book for young children. It would be a great prelude to the LITTLE HOUSE (Wilder) series.
Sarah, who just happens to be "plain and tall" answers an ad in the newspaper from a man who is looking for a wife due to his wife's death during childbirth. While other attempts had failed, the father continues to seek companionship and help in raising his children. What a blessing it is when Sarah responds.
Oh goodness, I remember the librarian reading this book to us in 4th? grade! That's pretty much all I remember about it...
ReplyDeleteTrish ~ This is a great time for me to pick up those Newbery winners that I never read or heard. Even if a librarian had read it to me, I wouldn't have listened. :)
ReplyDeleteI never realized the movie was based on a book. Too bad it sounds like the book is a little young for my niece. I'll have to keep it in mind though, the movie was quite nice.
ReplyDeleteI liked the movie - but have never read the book. It sounds like a sweet and easy read.
ReplyDeleteSounds interesting. I will have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteHi Joy ... just a comment to let you know I tagged you for the Blogging Tips Meme!

I liked this book and the sequel, which my son and I read together when he was 9, I think. I agree it would be a nice companion piece to the Little House books :)
ReplyDeleteCarrie K ~ I didn't remember there was a movie. :)
ReplyDeleteMe ~ Sweet and easy, yes, indeed.
Myutopia ~ If you like children's book, this is a nice one.
Laura ~ Thanks Laura! :)
Gentle Reader ~ I didn't know it had a sequel. Hmmmm Thank you.
The sequel to Sarah, Plain and Tall is called Skylark, and takes place after Sarah and Papa are married, and it's also good!
ReplyDeleteGentle Reader ~ Thank you! I just looked it up and there are two more after SKYLARK. There's CALEB'S STORY, then MORE PERFECT THAN THE MOON.
ReplyDeleteJoy - clearly you don't have my obsession for Christopher Walken! ;)
ReplyDeleteCarrie K ~ Apparently not, because I don't even know who Christopher Walken is!!! Please explain, I want to be enlightened! :)
ReplyDeleteNow that you mention it, I remember hearing about Caleb's story! And Christopher Walken is the actor who plays the father in the movie version of Sarah, Plain and Tall, and I want to say that Glenn Close plays Sarah. I think it was made for TV awhile back. Christopher Walken is a character actor and surprisingly, a song and dance man, who has been in a million movies, things as various as movie adaptations of Stephen King novels, and a beloved guest host on Saturday Night Live. Anyone know the "more cowbell" skit with Will Ferrell? Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteGentle Reader ~ I think I gave away the fact that I'm not a movie watcher. :)
