MIDNIGHT RAMBLER
James Swain
Personal Rating: 4.25/5
Yearly Count: 92

Jack Carpenter is an ex-cop. With his last case still hanging over his head, Jack continues to reside in Florida, but is now employed as an abduction specialist. New evidence from the previous case appears and threatens the prison term already imparted on the accused. Jack does everything in his power to keep the accused in prison and to tie up the loose ends of the case, so he can move on with his life.

I liked the character Jack, but would have liked to have known him more. At times, he seemed a little closed-off, but he certainly made up for it by his impulsivity. Also, his passion for justice was by far his driving force and an endearing quality in conjunction with his love of family and true friends. There were a few minor details I didn’t care for, but overall a very good, active read.

This is how another character describes Jack's impulsive behavior:

"You're living in some gray area, making up the rules as you go along."

This perception is very accurate.

While this particular book is a standalone (see UPDATE below), I’m interested in checking out the first in Swain’s Tony Valentine casino-themed series titled Grift Sense.

UPDATE:
This is the first in a series!!!

  3. I've heard Jack Carpenter's name come up a couple of times in book discussions, but I wasn't sure what book he was from. Now I know! The book does sound like one I would enjoy. Thanks for the review, Joy!

  5. Literary Feline ~ I think this is the first for Jack Carpenter being a standalone, but there is Andy Carpenter by Rosenfelt that has been around awhile. Did they speak positively about the character? I think you'd like both. :)

Framed ~ I think you'd like it, too.
