This book was just shy of being a Newbery Winner by ending up as a 1984 Newbery Honor Book. I can see the value in its message and recognize its truths, but other than that, I didn't find it to be anything special.
While learning from each other, an "Indian boy" (Attean) and a "white boy" (Matt) develop a friendship. The narrator is Matt, so we get his understanding of the Indians and their way of living off the land. The lessons become very important to Matt.
