Told from the middle child's perspective, the Hegarty family gather together for a loved one's funeral. Memories, future thoughts, today, dreams, truth, hallucinations - all jumbled up together - what a mess!
If it weren't for the fact that I received this book from the kind-hearted Gentle Reader of Shelf Life and that it is a Man Booker Challenge AND Notable Books Challenge choice, I would have abandoned it from the get-go.
This really seems to be a love it or hate it kind of book.
ReplyDeleteJoy, I have not had the best luck with Booker Prize books. What's up with that??? I've held off reading this book because a little voice in my head says "You're not going to enjoy this" every time I pick it up at a book store!
ReplyDeleteTanabata ~ You know where I stand. :)
ReplyDeleteMary ~ Follow your little voice's advice!!! :) When I was about 1/3 of the way through, I told my DH that I wasn't enjoying it, he said, "Are you really surprised?"
I have only liked 1 out of 3 so far from my list of 6. I hope I like the rest.
That's to bad! I have wanted to read this, it hasn't been near the top of the TBR though. Maybe it will stay at the bottom for a while longer.
ReplyDeleteMaw Books ~ Apparently some people like it and I hope if you pick it up that you are one of them. Nobody likes to waste time on a book that doesn't suit them.
ReplyDeleteI trust your judgment. I'll skip this one. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLes ~ Thanks for the trust. I had an inkling when it didn't fly with Gentle Reader's bookclub, but I gave it a try anyway for the challenge. It just wasn't for me.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad I am not the only one who didn't like this book. I agree - what a mess. LOL
ReplyDeleteKara ~ It's nice to be in good company. :)
