Susie Harriot, a psychiatrist in Scotland, has been convicted of murdering a serial killer. Her husband, Lachlan, remains loyal to her as he searches through all her belongings in the home office to prepare for an appeal.
With Lachlan as the narrator, his daily thoughts and actions are shared as he tries to find anything to help clear his wife's name. Some of it became repetitive, but for the most part it drew me into Lachlan's world. I enjoyed that process, but the last quarter of the book contained raw thoughts and language that didn't appeal to me. Also, I didn't care for the ending. Even so, Mina is a new-to-me author and this has piqued my interest to discover more of her work.
I have not read Denise Mina's books as yet. I have heard good things about them though they do seem be pretty hardedged. That is sometimes just what is wanted though. I swing back and forth between cozies and mysteries that are definitely not cozies. Watched an episode of WIRE IN THE BLOOD last night. Definitely not for the faint of heart!

ReplyDeleteKay ~ This had a creepy or eerie feeling to it - like a dark, damp, gloomy room. That feeling is what kept me interested. I appreciate that ability in a writer. I don't know if it would have the same effect if I had read it.
ReplyDeleteSwearing doesn't bother me when I read it, but listening to it sometimes makes me literally cringe. Towards the end, the main character said stuff that I didn't like - even so, I do want to try another by her. I'm glad to read that you have heard good things about her books.
Nicola ~ There's not a lot of action. It has a "behind the scenes" kind of narration. I'm not sure if that makes sense. Scenes are played out as he discovers things, but they are after the fact. :)
