Today, I began listening to this book with the plan to switch over to reading it, as soon as I finished my current book. My plan has been aborted; I am abandoning the book. I'm simply not deriving any pleasure from it. Amazon customers (279) rated it an average of 4 stars - if you click on the book image, you can check out what they have to say.
A fellow blogger, 3M from 1morechapter, was so very kind in passing on this book to me, via a giveaway, that I have decided to do the same. If you would like to win this paperback copy (which I believe has only been read once), please leave a comment and I'll post the winner on April 18th. (I'm sorry, but I need to restrict this giveaway to US residents only.)
Joy, my husband gave up on it, as well. Do you wonder sometimes about the Amazon ratings?
ReplyDeleteWe're reading it for book group. I mentioned to another person in the group that it was like watching a movie made with a handheld camera. Also, Jones takes his "omniscient narrator" status a little too seriously...but I'm going to read it all the way through...
ReplyDeleteMary ~ WHAT!?! You don't want it? lol
ReplyDeleteAs for Amazon ratings - yes, I do wonder. A lot of the "reviewers" are there to give great ratings to encourage sales, so it's not necessarily a believable source. However, I have seen many bloggers who rate everything 4's and 5's as well. Personally - as indicated by my posts, I don't like everything I read. :)
Bybee ~ It would definitely be better to read/discuss with others - just for the encouragement alone. :)
ReplyDelete"Omniscient narrator" is a perfect way to describe him! I just couldn't handle him or the disjointed story anymore. I didn't want to work that hard for enjoyment. I may be missing out in the end, but I'll take my chances. :) Please come back and let me know your final thoughts.
Would love to be entered, please count me in!
ReplyDeleteDon't add my name to the drawing as this one has been sitting on my shelf forever. Maybe I better try and give it away and not even bother with reading it.
ReplyDeleteBooklogged ~ I'm having a hard time giving it away!
ReplyDeleteEncouraging news for you . . . there were some parts that I was really enjoying (a story here, a story there). And it wasn't boring, so you never know - you might like it.
Okay, I just checked out this book on amazon. "is a masterpiece of overlapping plot lines, time shifts..." I am interested already. I find unconventional time usage very compelling. Please enter me!
ReplyDeleteSince so many people don't seem to care for it, that makes me want to read it and see what I think! Please enter me in your drawing. I appreciate it. Thanks, Cindi

I heard of a scandal with those Amazon ratings. Sees if you get a group of likeminded people together and "report rating" numerous times, guess what??? they remove the rating! Unreal..can't believe it happens...well you can bet your sweet Petunia it does!
ReplyDeleteOh, by the way, I'd love to read this book!
Sounds like an interesting book! Please include me in the drawing. ~ :) Thanks!

Well, I'm sort of intrigued by the book now! ha,ha... So yes, please put in name the drawing. thank you!
ReplyDeleteI don't usually read reviews of books before I read them. For some reason, I don't usually like what the mainstream does!!
ReplyDeleteBut I'd like to be entered, if you please!
