SIMPLE LITTLE WORDS

Simple Little Words shares a series of stories that demonstrate the power of . . . simple little words.  Each mini-example is a huge testament to how our language impacts others.  It is a delightful, encouraging book that includes Bible verses and short prayers to inspire us to be better people and to remember to shower others with loving words -- because words can and do change lives.

Through observation and personal experience, I have always known that words have power.  It is incredible to watch a precious, innocent child receive information.  Their feelings will bubble up to the surface of their face displaying their true emotional response.  As adults, we have learned to modify or conceal our outward emotions (totally appropriate at times), yet the words spoken can still leave a mark deep on our soul.  What kind of mark do you leave on others?

SIDE NOTE:

I want to make it clear that when I post my thoughts on books, I am not writing about the author (unless I specifically state that I am). My reaction is to the product, not the person. There have been numerous times when someone has not liked what I have produced and have felt the 'sting' personally, so I do empathize with an author reading an underwhelming review. It's difficult to separate the product from the person when the person is you; however, I believe it is a necessary function, especially when dealing with the public.

If I have inadvertently stepped on toes and/or battered a heart, I am truly sorry. It has not been my intent to hurt or wound. I am reacting to the fictional words I have read (the product) - please do not take it personally. That's a hard task to master, I know.

  1. Joy, I'm so glad you did enjoy the book. I'm always nervous when I recommend something that it won't be someone else's cup of tea. I agree on your side note. It is hard to separate things when people's feelings are involved.

  2. Joy-Great review! I have my copy that I won from Dar's giveaway and can't wait to get to it. I think that I need to move it up in my pile as it sounds very applicable to my life right now. Words do have power and I agree with your side note. I respect your honesty!

  3. Dar ~ This was a perfect book for me. I really liked it a lot. It is a great reminder to say the least. Thanks again, Dar.

Bonnie ~ I think you'll really like it too, Bonnie. It's a fast read, but it has a long-lasting effect. (?) (crud - I still can't distinguish between affect and effect) :) Did I guess right?

  4. I remember seeing this over at Dar's and thinking it sounded very uplifting but also thought provoking. I think our words do have a much bigger impact that we sometimes realize. Is that why the side note?? I'm very curious about your inclusion of the side note...

  5. Trish ~ Yes, I added the side note because of the impact my words have had on authors. I've had e-mail conversations with a handful of authors and they always have been gracious and understanding - thankfully. Well, except for one. She was devastated and she made me feel like I wounded her for life. Anyway, like I said, it's not my intent to hurt authors, but I'm not going to lie that I liked their book when I didn't. The authors I did talk to said that they like it when someone actually says what it was that they didn't like versus just saying "I hated it.", so I do try to clarify that.

I find words interesting because sometimes saying the same thing to one person can mean something totally different when said to another. I believe it's often how we take in information that forms the meaning - virtually how we view ourselves or the world.
