I love Lisa See's work, so I'm a bit saddened that this one didn't appeal to me at the moment. I listened for over an hour, and it wasn't engaging me. So - with a big lesson learned close behind, I decided to set it aside. Hopefully I have better results when I try again in the future.
Sorry this one did not work for you. I love Lisa See, and did read this one. It was good, but not my favorite. Did you read Snowflower? Amazing!
ReplyDeleteOh no!! This one's been on my wishlist even though Snowflower was just a good read for me. Bummer, Joy (but good for you for know when to say enough is enough).
ReplyDeleteI'm saddened too, since I've really been looking forward to this book.
ReplyDeleteDiane ~ That seems to be the general consensus - liked it, but wasn't a favorite. Yes, I read Snowflower years ago and thought it was very good, but I liked Shanghai Girls better.
ReplyDeleteTrish ~ Giving up (temporarily) on Lisa See is HUGE in my book. :( However, I'd rather enjoy it when I'm in the right mood (providing that's the reason for the lack of appeal.)
Bermudaonion ~ I know that it's not the favorite of See's novels, but I'm thinking that it's still good. I'm hoping it's just a timing issue for me. I will try again. You may do just fine on the first try - here's hopin' that's the case!
I like Lisa See, too. Probably will pass on this one.
ReplyDeleteBooklogged ~ I'm really looking forward to Shanghai Girls sequel.
ReplyDeleteI almosr bought this book today. Now I'm glad I didn't :)
ReplyDeleteStacybuckeye ~ Others liked it Stacy. And, I might at another time, too. But, for now, it's shelved.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry this one didn't work for you, Joy. I haven't had a chance to read it yet. My mom really liked it when she read it, but her tastes don't always run along with mine.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, maybe I should read this one before I read Snowflower. I'm probably the last person on the plant to have not read that one. Or Water For Elephants. Not sure why I've let those two books linger on my shelves. Waiting for the hype to die down, maybe? I think I've waited long enough, don't you? :)
ReplyDeleteI have this on audio -- got it from a library sale. Sad to hear you didn't like this one. I'll still probably try it at some point, but I'm more interested right now in reading her sequel to Shanghai Girls.
ReplyDeleteLiterary Feline ~ I'm curious as to whether you'll like it or not. I hope I get into when I try again. I'll be watching your blog for your review.
ReplyDeleteLes ~ From the ratings, Snow Flower is definitely rated higher, but you may really enjoy Peony - go with your gut. :)
Oh, I loved Water for Elephants. Isn't it interesting that hype can make or break a book? I think it's still personal timing that works best, though.
I hope you enjoy whatever you choose. :)
3M ~ Oh, me too!!! Can't wait for the sequel. :)
