I'm actually practicing what I know to be great advice: "Don't continue reading a book, if you're not enjoying it." That seems like a no-brainer and easy for some, but it is difficult for me. However, I am once again improving in this area (I tend to forget how to do it), but obviously hope I don't get really good at it. :) Ya gotta give a book a chance, right?
What drew me to the book in the first place was that it was a mystery based on truth - sounded great! And, I didn't discover anything inherently wrong with it. It just didn't engage me. When I found myself not wanting to read it and then forcing myself to do so, I knew that was a BIG clue that something was not right. I'm smart like that! *smirk*
The Reservoir is scheduled to be released on June 21. It just wasn't right for me at this time, but Amazon currently has 8 ratings with an average of 4/5.
I am finding I am a lot less patient right now when reading a book that doesn't engage me right away. Usually it takes a lot for me to set a book aside. I keep hoping it will get better.
ReplyDeleteLiterary Feline ~ HI! It's so good to see you! :)
ReplyDeleteI always hope the book will get better, and it often does, but forcing myself to read to get to that point is just plain silly.
I just got a copy of this one, so I'm hoping it works for me. (I've been having a tougher time reading lately as well (really reviewing).
ReplyDeleteDiane ~ I hope it does work for you, too. It may be a great read, but it just didn't grab me. Maybe a better way to say "it didn't grab me" would be "I wasn't in the mood for it." The eBook I am reading now is difficult to put down, so I am pleased with my decision to abandoned The Reservoir.
ReplyDeleteThinking I need to take your lead and abandon my current book (Saturday by McEwan). I have a really tough time giving up on a book but not sure why when all it make mes me want to do is NOT read.
ReplyDeleteHow do you like reading on your ipad?
Trish ~ Move on! :) It doesn't mean it's a horrible book - only that it's not doing anything for you now, but causing stress. I was stressing with my read (abandoned it) and now I'm a happy camper with my new read. Nobody needs self-imposed stress. Life dishes that out nicely all on its own. Seriously, I've seen your shelves - choose another one! ;)
ReplyDeleteAs for my iPad, I can't say enough good about it! I think it is the best technology EVER! Okay, well the iPhone isn't so bad either. :) As for specifically reading on it, it's awesome! It's not for outdoors due to the glare, but indoors and at bedtime when Mr. Joy is trying to sleep - couldn't be more perfect. It actually has saved our marriage! Well, not literally, but one never knows. We had many tiffs about the lighting, the page turning noise, etc. With the iPad, he sees no light and there is no noise when turning a page! Also, with the iPad you have numerous reading options with apps. Like I said, I LOVE my iPad. It's my laptop and eReader in one!
I have a Kindle, too, which I like - a lot, but I use it a lot less.
You use your ipad as laptop? For typing? I would love to do that--would make blogging so much easier--but have such a tough time typing and haven't gotten an external keyboard.
ReplyDeleteAnd done. Moving on to The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag. Fingers crossed. ;)
That happened to me the other day when I started a new book on the Kindle..after a few minutes and really not feeling it I just deleted the book and moved on. Thank Goodness it was a free download!
ReplyDeleteTrish ~ Of course!!! I don't have an external keyboard, but do just fine with the touch one that comes up. I have to type with two fingers though. :) Once I got used to it, it hasn't bothered me in the least. I do all my blog post, emails, view google reader, etc. on it. I thought that was its purpose! :) I have and do everything that I do on my desktop on my iPad. However, I don't post the pics of books on it because I don't want to load it down with a million book pics like I have on my desktop.
ReplyDeleteYay! I, too, am crossing my fingers for you over here regarding your new book adventure.
Staci ~ Good for you!! I purchase a lot of .99 books. I need to stop. :/ However, I read my Kindle outside today, and it was . . . oh so nice! :)
I'm terrible at giving up on books. Life's too short, I know. Maybe when I turn 40 later this year I'll give myself new guideline ;)
ReplyDeleteStacybuckeye ~ I believe age does change our thinking in many areas of life. Wasting time reading books that aren't enjoyable just becomes a little foolish. It's a difficult habit to break, though. What is maddening is when you've given up on a book and it receives rave reviews, including comments like it had a slow, struggling start. Ahhhh.
