Finley & Figg, Chicago law partners of 20 years, are pure ambulance chasers and are barely making a living. Young David Zinc, on the other hand, is secure, but miserable at his high rise downtown firm. David chooses to run and make something different of his career, and joining Finley & Figg seems to be the answer. One partner's eyes turn into dollar signs and the other drags his feet when a popular cholesterol drug has been linked to the deaths of several consumers. David gets swept up, not sure if this is a good thing or a bad.
This book had a comic feel to it and would work well as a movie. There wasn't anything particularly laughable, it was just the bumbling attorneys trying to get ahead that made me shake my head. I enjoyed the tone and appreciated a break from Grisham's traditional serious cases.
I've heard this is more like Grisham's early books. It sounds worth reading.
ReplyDeleteBermudaonion ~ I heard that, too, but don't necessarily agree. I enjoyed it for its uniqueness.
DeleteI haven't read a Grisham book in ages...maybe he's back in rare form again?
ReplyDeleteStaci ~ I've seen a range of ratings, so to each its own. The lower ratings were mainly based on people not liking the two lawyers. I never had a problem with them cuz I considered them caricatures.
DeleteBoy, it's been a long time since I've read anything by Grisham. If you had rated this just a tad bit higher, I might've been tempted.
ReplyDeleteLes ~ Check out other people's opinions. I wouldn't want you to miss out cuz of me. I have all his books (except the YA) and consider myself a loyal fan even when he doesn't write a stellar book. This one had an offbeat feel that I liked.
DeleteHa! So not necessarily in the drama section? It's been YEARS since I've read Grisham. Have been wanting to read The Firm lately since I never got to that one.
ReplyDeleteTrish ~ The Firm is classic and a must read! :) This one is still filled with drama, but there's a comic air to it.
DeleteI think we gave it about the same rating but it sounds like you liked it a bit more than me. The two lawyers were bumblings, but they never really engaged me. Viewing them as caricatures might have helped!
ReplyDeleteStacybuckeye ~ The beginning set the tone of caricature characters just with David himself. After that introduction, I didn't take anything too seriously. I'm glad that you still enjoyed it some. :)
