GONE GIRL

Author: Gillian Flynn
Genre: Psychological Thriller, Standalone
Published: 2012
Personal Rating: 4.5/5 (excellent)
Format: eBook
Yearly Count: 25

From NetGalley:

On the morning of their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick's wife, Amy, has disappeared. Nick is weak, Nick is a liar, and maybe he's not the very best of husbands--but is he a killer? Amy's diary reveals turmoil over their marriage, strange sicknesses, and her deep wish to be a mother--but is she telling the whole story? As the evidence slowly mounts, and the cops' investigation deepens, Nick is incriminated in horrible ways. Nick swears he didn't murder his beautiful wife and goes on the offensive to clear his name...only to learn that something may have happened more disturbing than death.

WOO HOO!  This is my first "best read" of the year!  It's not unusual for my first to come so many months into the new year, but I always hope for sooner.  No matter - I'm certainly enjoying my book high now!  I have to say, though, that I didn't think it was perfect.  Specifically speaking, the ending was not what I had hoped.  It was satisfying, but I just wish it was different.

Starting from the beginning, I was very intrigued.  I wanted to know more and more and more.  Once I reached close to the middle of the book, I couldn't put it down.  Oh that was absolute heaven for me, as I don't get that feeling as often as I would like.  The suspense and twists that were shared through the entries of Nick and Amy were so captivating that I had to keep reading.  I loved discovering more about their warped, abnormal thoughts.  That sounds a bit odd on my part, but their distorted views really kept me glued to their story.

I am now very eager to get to Flynn's other two books that are sitting on my TBR shelves!

My thanks go to Crown Publishing Group and NetGalley for providing me with this eGalley. Gone Girl is scheduled to be published on June 5, 2012.

OK, anytime Joy says "WOO HOO", I take notice. I've had my eye on this one and look forward to reading it, even though I haven't read the 2 previous books. So, I'll make a note to watch for it at the library. Glad you finally got a Best Read, Joy! LOL

    1. Kay ~ I'm so happy to see you! I just started catching up on blog posts last week. I still have a pile of yours to get to. Life, as you are experiencing as well, can really get in the way.

The publishing date is not until June, but it's worth the wait! :)

    1. Diane ~ We need more time in a day! I've had her books since they were paperback, but haven't gotten to them yet. Now that I've read this one, I hope I can get to those sooner rather than later.

  5. I snagged an ARC of this at work a couple of weeks ago. After reading your review, I've moved it to the top of the stack to read as soon as I finish Mo Hayder's Gone. Funny that they both have "gone" in their titles!

    1. Les ~ That's terrific! How do they work the ARCs at B&N for employees? Do you get to pick and choose or are you only offered specific titles? I can't wait to read your thoughts on this one. Especially in regards to the ending!!! I believe I've only read Birdman by Hayder. Again, there's just not enough time to get to all the books I want to read!

    2. The ARCs are sent to the store and they're up for grabs on a "first come, first serve" basis. Since I'm usually one of the first employees in the store (7 am!), I tend to get quite a few. But I try not to be too greedy. ;) I'm always surprised how many ARCs sit around, nobody taking them!

  6. I read her first and liked it, although not as much as the hype surrounding it. You have me excited to give this one a try!

  7. Oh man. It's been way too long since I've read a book I just couldn't put down. Think the last was the audio for Before I Go To Sleep. This sounds like it might be a little similar in some ways. Have you read that one?

    1. Trish ~ I guess that feeling wouldn't be special if it happened all the time, would it? I could handle experiencing it a little more frequently, though. Thank you very much.

Yes, I read Before I Go to Sleep (4/5), but liked this one more. I didn't care for the repetition in BIGTS and some of it was unrealistic, but it was still a very good book. There are similarities in the suspense and journal entries. Enjoy!

    1. Mary ~ I think this would be a good one for you - it's more of a psychological thriller than a gory one and very suspenseful.

Btw - It's great to see you! :)
