A GROWN-UP KIND OF PRETTY

Author:  Joshilyn Jackson
Genre:  Fiction, Standalone
Published:  2012
Personal Rating:  3/5 (just okay)
Format:  Audiobook
Yearly Count:  51

Grandmother (Big), Mother (Liza) and Daughter (Mosey) are 15 years apart in age and all live together.  Questioning from many angles begins when bones are discovered in their backyard.

This book is getting rave reviews, but it didn't win me over.  I didn't care for the storyline and never connected with any of the characters.  Putting it down wasn't a problem, even though it did keep my attention when I was listening.  This is the third Jackson book I have read or listened to, and I don't think that we are very compatible.  I think this one is my last.  I need to care and be intrigued; otherwise, I'm really just wasting my precious time.

    1. Diane ~ Jackson narrates the audiobook herself, so you may really enjoy that. This genre just hasn't been working for me.

    1. Danielle ~ If you loved her others, then I'm thinking you'll love this one, too! I prefer thrillers, so this genre needs to work really hard to impress me and not many have this year. It's been a bit of a struggle and disappointment, but my reading diet cannot just consist of thrillers. They begin to blur together after a while.

  3. Not every person will love every author and yes, your time is precious !! Some days I cat believe that it's time for bed and I still haven't finished everything that I wanted to! Not liking a book is a horrible feeling.

    1. Staci ~ It's so frustrating when you want to like something, but you just don't. :( In this case it's this genre. I don't give up because I have truly enjoyed some, but they are few and far between. I try to just move on, but seeing so many ratings 3 and below is beginning to bother me - makes me feel like I'm wasting my time even contemplating reading certain books.

  4. Sorry this one was not a great read for you. I am so excited to learn that you are from MI. How did I miss the M Go Blue on your sidebar?

    1. Nise ~ Do you have a Michigan university team you root for? I'm a Michigan fan and Staci is a State fan.

  5. Everytime I see this cover it makes me want to rush out and buy it. Still need to try this author because of all the raving bloggers, but it's nice to have a dissenter in the bunch ;)

    1. Stacybuckeye ~ This is just not my preferred genre. I'm not surprised that it turned out to be just okay for me. Disappointed, but not surprised.

  6. It's been five years (almost exactly!) since I read "gods in Alabama" and I gave it a similar rating as the one you gave "A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty." None of her other books sound familiar, so I don't think I've read any others. Her books don't call out to me, so once again, I think we're in agreement. :)

    1. Les ~ I keep trying to love a genre that I don't. However, it's becoming more clear with every book I don't care for that I need to stop that! The new books are just so difficult to not pick up. I liked gods of Alabama the most out of the three I read.
