WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE

Author:   Maria Semple
Genre:  Fiction, Standalone
Published:  2013
Personal Rating:  2/5 (not enjoyable)
Format/Narrator:  Audiobook/
Kathleen Wilhoite
Yearly Count:  32

Bernadette, wife to husband Elgin and mom to 15-year-old daughter Bee, is a unique character who experiences things in her life to make her want to disappear.  And, that she does.

Sadly, I can't say that there was anything that I liked about this book.  I didn't hate it, but the more I listened, the less I thought of it.  Also, the narrator's voice never felt comfortable to me, it was actually on the verge of annoying.  I'm astounded by the 4.5 rating (769 reviews) on Amazon.  To each its own.

  1. This is a quirky novel, and not for everyone. I liked it, thought it was funny but there were parts that were annoying. It just went along with the characters and story. I liked the narrator, she was an actress on Gilmore Girls one of my favorite shows so I kept visualizing her and she was quirky on that show!

    1. Bonnie ~ I, unfortunately, didn't find any humor in it. :( Having a connection with the narrator certainly would have helped me. I am just a fiction-loving wanna-be. It's not that often I really enjoy anything outside of my preferred genre. BUT I WANT TO! :) I annoy myself. LOL

  2. I've heard this book is a send up of the quirks of the Seattle area where I live so I'm interested in it. Should I pass?

    1. Sheila ~ OH! If you are from Seattle, then go for it! :) I love reading about my city/state. The references are more on the derogatory side, though. AND, if you are like MOST people, you will love it. :) Don't mind me.

  4. I borrowed it from the library based on the rave reviews... interesting that you gave it a 2, wonder if I'd like it or not?! I have no idea about Gilmore Girls... and there are other books that people found funny and I don't. Ummm...

    1. Christa ~ I prefer sarcastic, dry humor over silly, ridiculous humor. I find myself smirking or grinning at most books that others think are hilarious. Good luck with this one.

    2. It ended up a DNF for me...

    3. Christa ~ I'm not surprised. It probably would have been a DNF for me as well if I was reading it.

  5. I have seen some other not so favorable reviews of this one so I keep debating about reading/listening to it. I think for now I will just move on...

    1. Staci ~ You are much more of an eclectic reader than I am, so you'll probably enjoy it in either format.
