THE RUINS

Author:  Scott Smith
Genre:  Sci-Fi, Standalone
Published:  2006
Personal Rating:  1.5/5 (Ugh!)
Format/Narrator:  Audiobook/Patrick Wilson
Yearly Count:  25

A group of college kids go to Cancun for a party-filled vacation when the brother of a group member doesn't return from a mini-excursion.  They go looking for him in the jungle.

To quote the book, "... astoundingly stupid ..."  To reduce it to a one word from me, "ABSURD."

  1. Hmmm, this has been on my list ever since Stephen King recommended it. Some say it was the best horror book of that year. The movie looks too scary for me but I'd read the book. Did you know it was horror went you went into it?

    1. Nicola ~ All I knew was that these people go out into the jungle and something happens. Some people told me that it had a (Ahhh! I can't remember the word now.) strange component to it. I never heard that it was "horror." If this is horror, then horror is stupid. :) :) :) My husband liked it more than I did, but still had some of the same complaints as me. He can accept ridiculousness better than I can. LOL

    1. Literary Feline ~ The basic plot was a good idea. It's how it was implemented that threw me. :(

Oh no!!! I almost started this one a few weeks ago and have been looking forward to it forever (since I read and adored Smith's A Simple Plan). I guess at least you've lowered my expectations :(

    1. Stacybuckeye ~ Well, if you like Sci-Fi (and apparently horror) then you should love it. :) Let me say this . . . it's a very negative book. If you aren't in the mood for that, skip it!
