LES MISERABLES

Authors:  Victor Hugo and SunNeko Lee
Genre:  Classic Graphic Novel (Manga), Standalone
Published:  2014
Personal Rating:  4/5 (very good)
Format:  eBook
Yearly Count:  51

From NetGalley:
Adapted for stage and screen, loved by millions, Victor Hugo's classic novel of love and tragedy during the French Revolution is reborn in this fantastic new manga edition!

The gorgeous art of TseMei Lee brings to life the tragic stories of Jean Valjean, Inspector Javert, and the beautiful Fantine, in this epic adaptation of Les Miserables!

I thought the story was very clear in this graphic novel form; however, I know it from seeing the musical several times.  The interesting part about it was reading it "manga style."  Reading a book from back to front and right to left turned out to be a very easy transition, but surprisingly, it made my experience a little bit fun.  :)  I thought the graphics were terrific and would certainly read another in this style.

Thoughts of Joy

My thanks go to Udon Entertainment and NetGalley for providing me with this eGalley.

  1. Yeah! You liked a manga! I absolutely hate this book (& musical) sorry! and Pride and Prejudice so decided not to sample these but hopefully one I like comes around someday. I've read lots of graphic adaptations but, now that I think of it, never a manga one.

    1. Nicola ~ Eek! It's not a pleasant story for sure, but the musical is a favorite of mine. Oh yes, and I saw the movie, too. I would never read the book though, so this graphic novel was perfect speed for me. :) I would try Pride and Prejudice as a manga, because it's a classic, but I don't know that story. I've never been interested.

  2. Who ever thought to do classics as graphic novels was brilliant! I even read The Odyssey (in graphic form) this spring.
(I"ve never seen the musical Les Miz)

    1. Raidergirl3 ~ I've read a couple now (not in manga style, though) and it's perfect for me. I'm not a classic-lover, so getting the story in short form is ideal. :) If the musical for Les Miserables comes to your area - it's a must-see!!!

Never tried manga, but this looks interesting and different. Need to see if my library has it!

    1. Stacybuckeye ~ Manga isn't what sold me. I'm not necessarily a manga fan, but it was a fun diversion.
