THE WATER IS WIDE

Children on Yamacraw Island, off the coast of South Carolina, receive a new teacher . . . Pat Conroy.

I didn't find this to be anything special.  I suppose if I had read any of Pat Conroy's work beforehand, I may have been more intrigued with his life before writing.
