FEAR NOTHING

Personal Rating:  4/5 (very good)
Format:  Book/Audiobook
Yearly Count:  59

From NetGalley:
My name is Dr. Adeline Glen. Due to a genetic condition, I can’t feel pain. I never have. I never will.

The last thing Boston Detective D. D. Warren remembers is walking the crime scene after dark. Then, a creaking floorboard, a low voice crooning in her ear. . . . She is later told she managed to discharge her weapon three times. All she knows is that she is seriously injured, unable to move her left arm, unable to return to work.

My sister is Shana Day, a notorious murderer who first killed at fourteen. Incarcerated for thirty years, she has now murdered more people while in prison than she did as a free woman.

Six weeks later, a second woman is discovered murdered in her own bed, her room containing the same calling cards from the first: a bottle of champagne and a single red rose. The only person who may have seen the killer: Detective D. D. Warren, who still can’t lift her child, load her gun, or recall a single detail from the night that may have cost her everything.

Our father was Harry Day, an infamous serial killer who buried young women beneath the floor of our home. He has been dead for forty years. Except the Rose Killer knows things about my father he shouldn’t. My sister claims she can help catch him. I think just because I can’t feel pain doesn’t mean my family can’t hurt me.

D.D. may not be back on the job, but she is back on the hunt. Because the Rose Killer isn’t just targeting lone women, he is targeting D.D. And D.D. knows there is only one way to take him down:

Fear nothing.

Oh my goodness.  I read 1/2 of the galley before the book was published and was loving it.  Life just got in the way and other things took over, then it found its way on the bottom of a pile.  :(  I truly was engrossed and wanted to read it!  How does that happen?!?

Once I rediscovered the book, I decided to listen to the audiobook so I would actually finish it.  I started at the beginning to refresh my memory and ended up enjoying it, but not as much as I did reading it.  I've only read/listened to a handful of books and never really felt this much discrepancy before.  It makes me wonder if all my 3 ratings would be higher had I read the books instead of listening to them.  Hmmmm.  Unfortunately, I just don't have the time to sit and read, so audiobooks will continue, but this exercise has me really pondering the reading vs audiobooks experience.

Thoughts of Joy

My thanks go to Christine Ball from Penguin Group and NetGalley for providing me with the galley and eGalley.

  1. I wonder that a lot.
I haven't listened/read many of the same books so it is hard to compare. Code Name Verity is one that I read first and loved, and then listened to it (because I got it free, and knew I loved it) and it just didn't work for me at all on audio. I'm sure the reader makes a huge difference. Neverwhere worked both ways for me, but took longer to get into the audiobook. I remember (except for the book) thinking that a book I listened to would be better on paper than audio. It's the books that I don't get a good visual of a character, or there are so many that I can't differentiate, that make me think a paper book would be better.

I did listen to all the Anne books by Montgomery this past year, and they work wonderfully no matter how you read them!

    1. Raidergirl3 ~ I agree that the narrator makes a huge difference. I'm not one to like a big performance because I like to visualize it myself. That should have been a big clue to me that I do prefer reading it myself. :) However, as I mentioned, there's just not enough time in a day to get to all the books I want to.

LOL regarding the Anne books! You are definitely a life-long fan! :) :) :)

Thanks for stopping by. It's always good to hear from you! :)
