During the 30's, George and Lennie are California farm laborers that are tired of traveling from job to job. To keep their spirit alive, this brain and brawn duo dream of owning their own farm one day. George wants to be independent and live off his own land and Lennie wants to take care of the rabbits. At their latest place of employment, some of what they encounter includes dependency, bullying and racism.

Wow. I loved this book. With few words (novella), Steinbeck created memorable characters and a plot that gripped my heart. The narrator did a spectacular job with this unforgettable story.

  1. I loved this book as well! Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors, and I'm looking forward to reading some of his other books soon!

  2. John Steinbeck wrote amazing stories. I read abridged versions of The Pearl (for English class in high school) and Grapes of Wrath and I loved them. I've heard of Of Mice and Men before but didn't know what it's about. Luckily I subscribed to your blog and now I know that it's another wonderful story by Steinbeck! :)

I loved this book! So much in such a tiny book.

  4. YAY!!! I've heard really good things about Steinbeck's work, but the only thing I have read by him is Travels with Charley--a sort of travelogue/memoir that I really enjoyed. I'm so glad you loved this book (and that not all classics are bad!). :)

  5. I love how Steinbeck immerses the reader in the setting of his books. I read Cannery Row last year and could almost smell the fish as I read, LOL. Love his books!

  6. Laura ~ Well, he's for sure on my TBR list now! :)

Josette ~ It's appearing like you can't go wrong with him. Several years ago I began listening to the Grapes of Wrath (and was interested), but something came up and I couldn't continue. Now, I want to get to it again.

Lynne ~ Definitely. DH read it in high school (like most of the world) and remembered it vividly to discuss with me.

Trish ~ I can't tell you how trilled I am - classics are actually redeeming themselves! I think I'm going to buy this one. :)

Mary ~ I was gagging from the smell of the dog and was getting hives from the hay in the barn. :)

This was always one of my favorite books...I loved Steinbeck in High School but haven't picked him up since. I loved Grapes of Wrath also.

  8. I've read The Grapes of Wrath and Travels with Charley (in fact, my cat Charlie is partially named for Steinbeck's poodle), but I haven't read Of Mice and Men. I'll add it to my list

  9. Though I've only actually read a few of his books, I seem to either really love them or really hate them. This is one of the ones I absolutely adore!

  10. I really loved this book. I read it a few years ago now but a few weeks ago there was a remake of the movie on tv and it just brought back the whole wonderful story. Glad you enjoyed it.

  11. Danielle ~ I wonder what I would have thought of it in high school. Hmmm

Charley ~ Travels with Charley??? Never heard of it. Must be pretty good to name your cat after his dog! So there's another one to look into. :)

Suzi ~ The reader was Mark Hammer. He did an excellent job with all the characters.

Debi ~ Can you remember or want to share one that you "hated"? :)

Dar ~ Another book I have to see as a movie - on the list it goes.

  12. I held my breath reading your review, hoping you liked this one! I love all of Steinbeck's books, but this is a particularly good one!

  13. I love Steinbeck. Grapes of Wrath and Travels With Charley are my favorites, although Of Mice and Men isn't too bad. I liked it much better than The Winter of Our Discontent!

  14. I love Steinbeck. I read The Pearl first, but East Of Eden and Of Mice And Men made me a fan forever.

  15. Oh sure...I hated The Red Pony! Positively hated it! So did my daughter, and she rarely dislikes any book.

  16. Nyssaneala ~ *grin* I hold my breath as I read a classic. :)

Les ~ Oh, another Travels with Charley! I have to check that out.

Bybee ~ I've heard of those! I need to read more Steinbeck for sure.

Rich ~ Ahhh, another one I haven't heard of. Thanks for the heads up. :)

  17. I love Steinbeck. East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath are my 2 favorites!

  18. Teddy Rose ~ Thanks for sharing your favorites. I am going to have a tough time deciding which Steinbeck to read next.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. :)

I hope you have a great day and ...
Happy Reading!
