DIGGING TO AMERICA
Anne Tyler ~ BOiPod
Personal Rating: 2/5
The story was very shallow and repetitious with no direction or point and the characters were boring and unimpressive. Thankfully, I was able to accomplish many other tasks while listening to it. If it wasn’t a BOiPod, I may have abandoned it; there wouldn't have been anything compelling enough to keep me reading. I like to be either entertained or informed (or both) when reading or listening to a book, unfortunately this one didn’t deliver in either arena.
*I snuck this one in while waiting for the arrival of another BOiPod placed on hold at the library, hence the 2nd "D".

I had heard somewhere that Digging was a disappointment. Thanks for letting us know. Sorry you had to waste your time.
ReplyDeleteFinally, someone else who hated an Anne Tyler book! I've only read one of hers because it was one of those rare books that made me so angry I wanted to throw it at the wall. It was Saint Maybe, one of those books that's so tragic you keep thinking, "It's got to get better; surely something good will happen," but, nope. Have you ever read anything else by Tyler?
ReplyDeleteBookfool ~ This was my first introduction to Anne Tyler and I really have no interest in attempting another. It was just plain boring. I have read/heard that her older books were very good. ???
ReplyDeleteOh, dear. I'm the minority here. I thought Digging to America was quite good. I wonder if you might have enjoyed it more if you'd read it rather than listened. I don't think I can include a hyperlink in this comment window, so if you want to read my review, I posted it on June 11th.
ReplyDeleteLes ~ I have heard that before re: listening vs reading. I do believe that reading does help you (me anyway) become more invested by taking you deeper into the story and characters. That could be the culprit. I'll read your review. And, I don't think you are in the minority. I thought I was going to be with such a blah review. I was so happy to read Bookfool's post. :)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I can't join in on the read vs. listen conversation because I don't do audio books (I never sit long enough in the car and can't stand headphones. But, I can say that after Saint Maybe, I've never wanted to try another Tyler book, like you, Joy. I'll have to jump over and read Les's review when my butt isn't numb. Guess I've been sitting here too long. Blush.
ReplyDeleteBookfool ~ I listen (on my iPod with headphones) when I'm walking outside for exercise and I put my iPod on a set of little speakers (no headphones) while I'm getting ready in the morning. Sometimes that's the only "reading" I can get in. :) Also, I'm a visual learner, so it took me a long time to get used to the audio, but love it now. It's worth considering. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, I've got an iPod and I sometimes walk (need to get back to that - the heat is putting me off) but I never, ever listen to anything while I walk. Headphones make my ears hurt because I've got some weird ear thing that magnifies certain types of sound, darn it. So I just listen to the birds and the crickets (or whatever - it's pretty noisy, down here; there's a lot of life).
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I'd enjoy them if I could stand the sound. I can't listen to music for very long, either.
Bookfool ~ So sorry to hear about your "weird ear thing". Seriously that can be distressing and you have my sympathy. Thank goodness your eyes are okay and you can read! :)
