Classics Challenge #3/5 & By the Decades Challenge ~ 40's (1945)

ANIMAL FARM
George Orwell
Personal Rating: 3.25/5
Yearly Count: 4

Another classic completed...two more to go.

Unfortunately for me, no new news has emerged on the classics front regarding enjoyment. Like I've said before, I'm glad I finally read it, but didn't find it compelling or outstanding in any way. Although, I do understand how this one probably became a classic. I can imagine all the "hubbabaloo" that the publication of this book must have caused with it's symbolism alone.

Since my last posting and questions regarding classics, I found this quote:

A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read. ~ Mark Twain

Thank you, Mr. Twain. I couldn't have said it any better! :)

  1. I'm sorry you aren't having luck with your classics. You're over half done now though!

I haven't read Animal Farm and am not sure I want to. It's just never appealed to me.

  2. I've read it twice, Joy, and didn't care for it either time.

  3. Literary Feline ~ Even though I have given my classic choices low-ish ratings, I'm really glad to be participating in this "CHALLENGE". I most likely would not have read any more classics (since my last disaster) and the challenge is really forcing me to try and understand this genre better. As you can probably tell from my posts, I'm truly trying to grasp the concept and learn from what I'm reading. (Although, I don't write "reviews", I just write my "thoughts" of how the book has left me.) Another thing I have learned is to NOT share what genres I do not like, because I just may be challenged to read them! :) Just kidding. By my choice, I've actually already committed to reading a "sci-fi" this year. UGH! What was I thinking!?! LOL

Just thought of something else...I believe it's a very healthy gift to ourselves to be well-rounded and open to new thoughts and ideas. Books can be incredible forces in guiding who we are and who we become, whether they change our initial thoughts or make them stronger. Just learning is fascinating to me. :)

  5. Thanks for pointing out the boo-boo in my blog links Joy!

I read Animal Farm in junior high (because I had to, LOL). I've only read a few other classics, again mostly in school when I had to! I really would like to read some though. I tried reading Jane Eyre twice and couldn't get into it but I am determined to read it, and that is one of my reading goals for 2007.

I love the Mark Twain quote.

  6. LOL, love the Mark Twain quote! I think listening to classics might be preferrable to reading them. I wonder if audio books are allowed for the challenge? I guess not!

  7. Eileen ~ I listened to Jane Eyre. That's another option for you. :)

Lotus ~ They are allowed for the TBR Challenge, but I have opted to "read" all of mine.

  8. Mark Twain put it so well. It really describes how I'm feeling reading "The Borthers Karamazov." But I'm determined to finish. I read "Animal Farm" centuries ago. Now I'm not tempted to read it again. Thanks.
