I have read several positive reviews of this book and was looking forward to a pioneer experience. I will have to look elsewhere for what I thought I would find here. This travel back in time just didn't produce anything to keep my interest. On a more positive note, it reminded me of THE GOOD EARTH without the deep storyline. Buy land, farm land, buy more land, we love land. I do love land just like the rest of the world, but a story with a little more depth would have been nice. Plain and simple (like the book) - it was boring UNTIL the last few chapters. She should have started there. :)
Classic, you say. Yep, fits right in with the rest of 'em.
Am I to understand you're calling classic books boring? Shocking! ;)
ReplyDeleteCarrie K. ~ You made me LOL big time! :)
ReplyDeleteI wasn't a big fan of O, Pioneers either. Have you read My Antonia. I'm willing to giver her another chance and plan to read that sometime in the future.
ReplyDeletePoor Joy - You just can't seem to find a good classic! Keep looking, there's bound to be a good one out there somewhere!
ReplyDeleteNyssaneala ~ No, this was my first read by Cather and I don't plan on reading any more. I only read it for the publishing date of 1913 for the Decades Challenge.
ReplyDeleteLynne ~ I liked A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN! :)
Uh oh. This one is on my list, too. I generally like classics, though, so maybe I'll have better luck.
ReplyDelete3M ~ My guess is that you'll like it more than I did. I don't like classics and I just read THE GOOD EARTH, so it had two strikes against it. However, I am glad I read it. :)
ReplyDeleteI think I read this one in high school (or was it My Antonia?). Anyway, which ever one we watched, there was also a movie with Anne Heche as the main character (wow, does that show my relative youth??).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I like to read classics, mostly I think because I'm a glutton for punishment, but I normally come away feeling the same way you did with this one. At least with my more recent ones. :) Why???
Trish ~ Youth is a good thing, be happy! :)
ReplyDeleteIn general, I think many classics are bland. I prefer action of some sort.
