By the Decades Challenge ~ 00's (1902)

HEART OF DARKNESS
Joseph Conrad
Personal Rating: 1.5/5
Yearly Count: 59

This book satisfies the 1900's for the Decade Challenge ... and that's about all. Ugh! Okay, there are two things that I liked about this book: 1. the word choice (excellent diction) and 2. it was a novella (short read!). Done.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one. I read it a few years back and agree with you.

Yay---finally, someone who shares my opinion of this book. As far as I'm concerned, the best thing about it is that it made Achebe write Things Fall Apart.

  3. A lot of people seem to be reading this lately. I completely agree with you...I despise this book, and I despise Conrad!

I also agree with Poodlerat, if the existence of this book helped to inspire Things Fall Apart, then it does have one postive side, as Achebe's novel is wonderful!

It sounds like you still haven't found very many classics that you like!

  4. Wow, Joy. You actually finished that? I was so bored I couldn't get past page 5. You are my new hero.

  5. Nicola ~ :) I'll have to come by and see if you reviewed it.

Poodlerat ~ I haven't read THINGS FALL APART. I will look into how this book played a part.

Nyssaneala ~ I'm beginning to think that I am a magnet for bad classics!

Kookie ~ I was antsy for sure, but I kept thinking...just one more page, just one more page and before I knew it, I was at the end!!! It was a VERY happy moment. :)

  6. LOLOL - there you go picking from the 'bad classics list' again. After I found out that the movie Apocalypse Now was loosely based on this book, I knew I'd never really have any desire to read it.

  7. I think the jury is out on whether or not you like most classics, Joy!

    Hah! :-)

I loved Heart of Darkness--rated it 5/5. Oh well. The world would be boring if we all liked the same things!

  8. Suzi ~ I seem to have found my calling. :)

3M ~ Ya know, I have received satisfaction in the fact that I have read them ... whether I liked them or not. :) I'm glad you like this one. And I agree, the world would be boring! I like having differences.

  9. Joy, that's kind of how I've been feeling about some of the award winners I've been reading. I'm glad I've read them to be "in the know", but at the same time question why some think it's great.

  10. Glad I'm not the only one who didn't like this book!

  11. 3M ~ Being "in the know" has propelled me into reading a lot that I haven't enjoyed. LOL

Gentle Reader ~ You most certainly are not alone!

  12. Oh Joy, I'm sorry you didn't like this one! 1.5!!! I don't think I'll be recommending any more classics to you...ever! :)

  13. Trish ~ It's not YOUR fault!!! I'm glad you (and others, but not many ... lol) liked this, but it's just not for me. I actually had this as my 1900's choice and changed it. Then I saw yours and somebody else's review and switched it back. I'm glad I met Conrad, so don't even give it a second thought. :)
