A LONG WAY GONE
Ishmael Beah ~ BOiPod
Personal Rating: 4.5/5
Yearly Count: 70

This memoir portrays the transformation of Ishmael, who was a typical pre-teen boy playing soccer and dancing one day, then a gun-toting soldier in a civil war the next. The graphic details of the war are shared, but those didn't affect me. Ishmael's heart and soul are what touched my inner core. His story is one of great sorrow and loss, yet I like to believe that shedding light on this atrocity can provide other child-soldiers the hope for freedom from such horrors. Ishmael is a courageous survivor. He will remain in my thoughts.

  2. I recently added this to my TBR pile as well! Another book with a similar theme is Beasts of No Nation by Uzodinma Iweala and that was an excellent read as well.

  3. BeckyB ~ It's good, but sad because of its reality.

Marg ~ I read BEASTS OF NO NATION as well, but like this one much more so because it is a true memoir.

  6. I've been eying this one for a few weeks now. I enjoy memoirs, as they always seem to teach me something valuable. This might be sad, but worthwhile nonetheless. Thanks, Joy.

  7. Danielle B. ~ Yesterday I clicked here and clicked there and ended up with an overwhelming amount of books to add to my TBR list. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Gentle Reader ~ That it is.

Les ~ I'm sure you'll learn something from this young man (actually he's 25 at the time of publication). If nothing else, you'll get a clear understanding of what it's like to be a child-soldier. Pathetic.

  9. Sounds like one I should read, but I usually subconsciously shy away from sad books. I've had Angela's Ashes on my list for years, but I just can't bring myself to read it. I know I would love both books, so I really don't know what my problem is.
