Book Awards Reading Challenge (Newbery)

ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS
Scott O'Dell ~ BOiPod
Personal Rating: 4/5
Yearly Count: 82

Now, this was a good one! Karana, a young Indian girl, has to depend upon herself for survival on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. She perseveres through the struggles with a determined mindset and she learns about herself along the way. Karana's life on the island is also educational as she goes about getting food, clothing and shelter. I enjoyed the storyline and the educational value from this 1961 Newbery winner.

  2. I know I was supposed to love this book, but I just didn't. Can't really put my finger on why. I have a feeling that I probably would have loved it as a kid though. Who knows.

  3. Nicola ~ First time for an O'Dell for me. I'll have to see what else he has written.

Debi ~ I know that feeling! Unfortunately, it happens to me all the time. I think listening to it after Maniac Magee made it all the better. :)

I loved that book when I was younger. Haven't read it in years.

Isn't it funny how timing is everything? I couldn't stand Catcher in the Rye, I think I was way too old when I read it.

  6. I read this one but don't really remember. My little brother is in the grade that I was when I read it, but when I asked him he said he doesn't know. He's not into books, but recently mom and sister started the Harry Potter series and now he is on book 1. A small victory!! Glad you liked it.

  7. Carrie K ~ I'm slowly catching up on all the books I never read as a child. :)

Danielle ~ I'm finally there and am glad I read it. Now I'm in the know! :)

Trish ~ It seems like if any book will turn a kids head, it's the HP series. :) I hope it turns him into an avid reader.
