ORYX AND CRAKE
Margaret Atwood ~ BOiPod
Personal Rating: 3.5/5
Yearly Count: 100!

Peculiar and Unique. When I discovered that the genre of this novel was sci-fi/post-apocalyptic, I wasn't too thrilled. It took me quite some time to adjust to that world, but once I did I began to enjoy it.

The main character's life is described in a flip-flop manner, going from his present to his past and back again. His name is Snowman. The other characters are Oryx and Crake and they are Snowman's friends. Their story is intertwined and a major part of the plot, but Snowman remains as the focus. I believe the past and present format really worked well for this book and I didn't have any qualms about switching back and forth.

After finally getting immersed into the storyline, which I attribute to Atwood's writing finesse, I was very curious as to what the ending held for me. I was very disappointed. Oh well, at least I enjoyed a chunk of it.

  2. wow, 100 books!

Is this your first Atwood? This is one of the few I haven't read, but I know there are a lot of people that don't like it. I love all of her other books, and would recommend one like Alias Grace in the future.

  4. 3M ~ Thank you! :) It certainly has been a very good reading year for me.

Nyssaneala ~ Thanks for the recommendation. I really did enjoy her writing. That's what kept me going.

Booklogged ~ This one was still good, just not my preferred genre. I will read another one of hers someday. She created a very interesting world and had me curious.

  5. I just noticed that you tagged this one "New-to-me author." I hope this book doesn't turn you off of Atwood!! I haven't read this, but I have heard really mixed reviews. From what I've read she is one of my favorite authors.

And holy cow! How do you find the time to read so many books? Between work, home, and extra curricular (working out, socializing), I'm happy to read a book a week--especially lately!

  6. Trish ~ No! This book hasn't turned me off of Atwood. I really did enjoy the writing, that's why I continued even when it was out of my comfort zone. Although, I don't have plans in the near future to pick one up. What's your favorite Atwood novel?

Unfortunately I'm laid off right now. However, I don't actually read more than I used to...I listen to more. So far I have listened to 53/100. There were some very short ones in there (Newbery winners). I listen to books on my iPod whenever I can...even while I'm cleaning the house. :) It makes me feel very lazy if I read during the day, so that doesn't happen too often.

  7. Joy, I didn't like The Blind Assassin that much, but I thought The Handmaid's Tale was WILD. You'll know what I mean if/when you read it. I recommend that one next.

  11. Congrats on 100!

I read it this year too. It was interesting but it wasn't the best thing I've ever read.

  12. I also was a bit let down by the ending to this one. I'd second the reccomendation to read Handmaid's Tale - it is wild and well-written at the same time.

  13. Chris ~ Thank you! :) I agree with your assessment.

BookGal ~ I was more than a "bit" let down, but oh well. I wonder if I would describe The Handmaid's Tale as "wild". Hmmm I may just have to read it and find out. :)

The Handmaid's Tale freaked me out when it came out but Blind Assassin is the first MA book I've managed to read since. They always sound so intriguing but I never seem to finish the others.

You've got a lot of challenges going on!

  15. Carrie K ~ I don't have any Atwood books on my challenge lists for 2008, so it'll be a long time before I get to another one.

Almost all the books I have for the challenges are crossed-challenged. :)
