FADE AWAY

Author: Harlan Coben
Genre: Mystery, Series #3
Published: 1996
Personal Rating: 3.5/5 (good)
Yearly Count: 109

Myron Bolitar is a sports agent that is asked to return to professional basketball - the sport that he was abruptly dismissed from due to a knee injury 10 years earlier. He quickly discovers that the invitation is not for his basketball skills, but to go undercover to locate a player that has disappeared.

I thoroughly enjoy Myron and his sidekick Win. Together their wit brings about smiles or grins, but Myron's personality can stand on its own. His sarcastic comments add flavor to the story and is what I like most about him. However, the plot in this book (#3) has allowed us to get to know Myron on more of a personal level, and I liked that side of him, too.

The series at this point is dated, but the references are fun and entertaining. Coben came out with the 9th book in March, 2009. It should prove to be interesting to move along in time with the books as I try to catch up.

  1. It's funny how quickly some books become dated and others stand the test of time so well.

  2. I loved the ending to this one! You learn a lot in a couple of sentences about Win through this ending, too. Classic Coben. While things are slightly dated, it is also a reflection of the time it was written...art imitating life! The themes are pretty timeless, though. Always the theme of friendship with Myron and Win. There's always an element of family. And the lost goal; trying to regain it. How many of us can say we didn't have one that got away?

  4. I read this one several years ago and it was already dated, but still fun reading. Gotta love Myron.

  6. I have the first book in this series and am looking forward to starting it. I've hesitated for so long because I wasn't sure I'd like reading a series about a sports agent. I really liked the Coben stand alone I read though, and I'm a sucker for a series.

  10. Bermudaonion ~ It is funny to hear a cell phone being called a "car phone" these days. However, at that time, that's what they were. I remember that it took me a while to call them "cell phones" when they became a mainstay on every human being. I was stuck in "car phone" mode. :)

Jen ~ How in the world do you remember the ending so vividly!?! I can barely remember it. However, I do agree. :) It definitely is a reflection of the times - I didn't mind it at all, though. It was great getting to know Myron (and Win) a bit more in this one and I do look forward to #4.

Booklogged ~ At this point, I have read more standalones than this series and have to say that I enjoy his standalones more. However, I still like this series, so that's a good thing all the way around. :)

Bookfool ~ The dated parts didn't bother me like they did in the alphabet series by Grafton. However, I think we're talking at least a decade (total guess) earlier with Grafton - big difference.

Vickie ~ *Big Grin* Yea, there is something to swoon about with both of them. :)

Literary Feline ~ I liked the first one the best of the 3 so far. I like sports so that wasn't a deterrent for me, but I don't think that aspect is overpowering. And, the sports change - the first revolved around football, the second around tennis and this one was basketball.

Stacybuckeye ~ I'm so happy to hear that Stacy! My plan is to keep reading one - every now and again.

Staci ~ As long as he remains a friend and you don't cross him! :)

Framed ~ I hope my interest in this series continues to rise. I'm for sure sold on his standalones.

  11. I love Myron and Win (man, is that guy a little sick, though, eh?). This series is one of my favorites. It's right up there with Lehane's "Kenzie/Gennaro" series. Great fun!

  12. Les ~ I still haven't read Lehane's series of Kenzie & Gennaro. Deep sigh.
