Two U. S. Marshals are summoned to investigate a woman's escape from the criminally insane facility on Shutter Island just off the Massachusetts's coast. During their investigation they discover more than they anticipated.
This book was going along fine, actual very well, until the ending was in sight. At that time, it became muddled and made me flip-flop my thoughts too often. In general, I thought the plot, characters and setting were all intriguing, and I really did enjoy it, but the book ended with unfinished business - not a favorable way to go out for this reader. The bit of humor that was sprinkled between the marshals was always appreciated.
This was my first introduction to Lehane, and it has spurred some curiosity in me regarding his other work.
Hmm - I'm thinking of going to this movie.
ReplyDeleteliked the book, but loved the movie. planning on seeing it?
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I've been wanting to read Lehane too. Not sure what book I'll start with.
ReplyDeleteOoh I didn't realize this was a book. I'd like to read it before seeing the movie. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI read this book on a stormy day, which definitely enhanced my experience. The Lehane title I hope to read at some point is The Given Day.
ReplyDeleteI added this today to my RecordedBooks wishlist.
ReplyDeleteBermudaonion ~ Me, too.
ReplyDeleteDiane ~ Ohhhhhh! That's interesting. After reading it, I wasn't so sure I wanted to see it. Hmmmm you've have made me reconsider.
Nicola ~ They all seem to be deemed as good reads, so maybe any one of them will do. :)
Callista ~ That's why I read (listened) it.
Charley ~ I've heard very good things about that book. I hope to read it one day.
Vickie ~ I loved the narrator! Enjoy!
I've been wanting to read this one for awhile now. Actually meant to last month but wasn't able to get to it. I enjoyed Mystic River quite a bit and want to read the author's series as well.
ReplyDeleteLiterary Feline ~ Hmmm, a series? I don't know if I knew that.
ReplyDeleteYes, there's a series and it's fantastic! Start with A Drink Before the War. You'll fall in love with the Boston PIs, Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro. I'm tempted to re-read these books, they are so good.
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn't love Shutter Island. Yes, the ending is a bit convoluted, but I loved it. Now I want to see the movie, which my daughter tells me was excellent.
Les ~ Thanks, Les. Now, I remember seeing/hearing that title before. I even think it's on my TBR List. I need to see if there's an audio version at my library.
ReplyDeleteThere was a lot I thoroughly enjoyed about Shutter Island, but I didn't like being toyed with. Unfortunately, I'm just too analytical. I've only heard good things about the movie, too. Here's to good viewing! :)
They ended is what saved this book for me. The movie really does stick to the book in all of its details.
ReplyDeleteI've got this one on my reader too. I've heard mixed thoughts on this one. I've only read Mystic River by Lehane and really liked it.
ReplyDeleteStacybuckeye ~ Isn't that funny? It's very interesting to me how anything and everything can strike people differently - even the minutia.
ReplyDeleteDarlene ~ Mystic River seems to be a popular book by Lehane. I think I have that in some form here. :) I'll get to it sometime. Glad to hear that you really liked it, too.
I want to read the book since I've already watched the movie. So it's an open ending? Just like the movie then. I was thinking about what actually happened!
ReplyDeleteBTW, love your header. :)
Josette ~ Hi! Nice to see you! Yep, it's an ending that leaves us to wonder. :(
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment. :)
